Readers of “Rotherham Politics” are always a canny bunch of citizens with an acute political awareness and deep sense of what’s right and what should be right among those in public life who supposedly serve us and not themselves.
The Seven Nolan Principles were established to govern standards of behaviour of those in public life –
- Selflessness – Holders of public office should act solely in terms of the public interest. They should not do so in order to gain financial or other benefits for themselves, their family or their friends.
- Integrity – Holders of public office should not place themselves under any financial or other obligation to outside individuals or organisations that might seek to influence them in the performance of their official duties.
- Objectivity – In carrying out public business, including making public appointments, awarding contracts, or recommending individuals for rewards and benefits, holders of public office should make choices on merit.
- Accountability – Holders of public office are accountable for their decisions and actions to the public and must submit themselves to whatever scrutiny is appropriate to their office.
- Openness – Holders of public office should be as open as possible about all the decisions and actions they take. They should give reasons for their decisions and restrict information only when the wider public interest clearly demands.
- Honesty – Holders of public office have a duty to declare any private interests relating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest.
- Leadership – Holders of public office should promote and support these principles by leadership and example.

What we have here, is a tired, clapped out set of Libel laws, that encourage libel tourism and at the same time so expensive as to deny ordinary folk protection against defamation, wherever it may occur!
UK law currently stipulates, that elected public figures and Council officials, may not be funded from public money to finance either an action for defamation or to defend one!
This places a considerable burden on bloggers, as they are not ‘above the law’. This blog goes to great lengths to ensure all information published here, is defensible in a legal sense**, before publication and to the best of our knowledge, true! Or would be considered ‘fair comment’. Should any reader feel we have published inaccuracies we would, be happy to deal with your complaint.
Hope this clarifies the situation. Can I remind you that I requested further information about your views on a Maltby resident you criticised in a post. I would be grateful for your justification for your published comments.

IMHO we’re already well covered by laws-a-plenty and regulations in this town and country, a la Rovrum Standards Board, for an example.
What’s long overdue is the impartial discharge of those laws, but don’t hold your breath here in Rovrum, cos t’Grooip’s da gaffaz n dey sez wot’s rayt or not, rayt.
Iffen yaz in doubt then ask our Swedish neighbours what they think to the quality of one of our Cabinet Clowns in particular … rayt 🙂

I have plenty of “relevant documentary evidence” but I am hardly likely to divulge it to you now Rik, am I, especially in the light of my past couple of comments in response to your responses, that the ‘editorial team’ have chosen not to print/publish 😉
BTW, IMHO Grald-Hunter’s choice of language and overuse of anachronisms is not, I suggest, what an average person would say is “serious debate “. More like patronising drivel… IMHO only of course ! (and to think other commenters on here have been called childish ! LOL )

I am not, never have been, and I never will be an “average person”.
In fact I am way way above average, I’m that far above average that I may even be nearly perfect … and I do not, could not, and would never ever seek to obtain your narrow myopic seal of approval for what you consider to be serious debate.
I seek to challenge the activities of those who seek elected public office in RMBC and those who obtain highly-paid statutory positions supporting those in elected RMBC public office who dispense my hard-earned tax bucks with all the enthusiasm of a champagne quaffing Hooray Henry at Donny Races with a handful of Dolly Twin Peaks books for t’babbiz.
I’m far far too busy scrutinising, challenging and being a “critical friend” of the Corn Fed Hogs, Muppets and Clowns at Town Hall Towers to have much of a care as to whether you approve or not, of me, my friends, my politics, or indeed my views.
Please don’t roll on the floor larfing your ass off on my account, it’s so so unladylike.

You know perfectly well that I am referring to your use of ridiculous ‘language’ on here which is clearly classed by ‘the editorial team’ as appropriate and adding to the ‘serious debate’.

IMHO this forum ain’t a twee rose covered cottage in the Auvergne where budding artists, authors and left-wing lurveez gather to chat over chilled wine and cheese and pick fluff from each other’s tummy buttons while showing each other their etchings and scratchings.
When ALL seven of the Nolan Principles are firmly embedded into the entire thoughts, actions and activities of the Corn Fed Hogs, Muppets and Clowns at Town Hall Towers then I’ll happily leave this watchtower … until that long day dawns it’s business as usual.
As Trambuster has already observed on here, the Nolan Principles in Rotherham public life are as rare as “the recovery” in Rotherham 😦

Thanks for the advice, rothpol, but not at all tired – just bored of the same old, same old as they say round ‘Rovrum’ ! One rule for one … and all that.
Rotherham Politics’ failure to address why my comments weren’t printed on other threads have made me feel rather apathetic about passing on my thoughts of ‘intellectual freedom’ here 😉
