My promise to the people of South Yorkshire.
If elected all candidates will have to sign an oath of impartiality.
In the absence of that, currently, we can only take their word for it.
I will go further than this “wait and see” promise.
“I, Nigel Bonson, of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, sincerely promise that I will act at all times with integrity and impartiality. I will act and take decisions, free of the influence or interference of Government, any political party, the trade unions or any specific individual or body.”
I am able to do this. I am not the puppet of large donors. I have maintained my integrity and impartiality whilst working within the police and the wider criminal justice system for the last 38 years and that will not change.
Here is the official oath from the Home Office website and I adhere to that too…

“I, Nigel Bonson of South Yorkshire do solemnly and sincerely promise that I will serve all the people of South Yorkshire Force Area in the office of police and crime commissioner without fear or favour.
I will act with integrity and diligence in my role and, to the best of my ability, will execute the duties of my office to ensure that the police are able to cut crime and protect the public.
I will give a voice to the public, especially victims of crime and work with other services to ensure the safety of the community and effective criminal justice.
I will take all steps within my power to ensure transparency of my decisions, so that I may be properly held to account by the public.
I will not seek to influence or prevent any lawful and reasonable investigation or arrest, nor encourage any police action save that which is lawful and justified within the bounds of this office.”

Well done, Nigel. You’ve gone much further than the inadequate PCC oath by swearing to act within influence from your party and leaders. I take my hat off to you for this brave ethical step.

I’m sure that Nigel’s not in the least bit nervous. Anyone who’s ever stood a post as a police officer in whatever capacity quickly learns that nervousness ain’t needed during critical moments … Nigel’s long years of operational police experience will have taught him to control his feelings and emotions and to function entirely with the job in mind.
Every UK police officer has to submit to the discpline of the Police Regulations, in much the same way that soldiers, sailors and air force personnel do. Their personal preferences take second place to the completion of the tasking they are given.
What about the conduct of the rioters, sorry I mean miners. Is anyone going to be compelling them to rigorous examination about their role in the Orgreave civic disorder? Ask them how come drystone walls that had stood for over 200 years near the iron bridge on Highfield Lane, Orgreave disappeared in an afternoon to be turned into airborne missiles to be launched into the police lines.
Let’s have questions to both sides in the interests of truth and transparency.

Grald-hunter is right, there were a lot of things went on that shouldn’t have I spent a night with 3 children under the age of 4 listening to the mayhem outside as the shield wall came down the road, and the bricks and bottles flew. I was more please to see a policeman who came to see if I was OK than the miner (if such he was ) was to see me armed with a carving knife threatening to remove certain parts of his anatomy and wear them as earrings if he didn’t get off my property.
Time to move on I think, and try to let the wounds heal instead of reopening them everytime there is a government or a decision that certain elements don’t agree with.

Its not me thats carrying this on, I only tweeted my thoughts on the subject but everyone seems to have reacted as if I had accused the Bonson chappy of something quite diabolical. Unless of coarse there is something he isnt telling us !!!!!!!

You have a strange sense of “entertainment”. But the question was asked and seems to have been honestly answered.
I recall a similarly inaccurate attempt to implicate me in wrongdoing in SYP’s history while I was a PCC candidate. I seriously considered suing some of your council colleagues for defamation of character and certainly would if the matter was raised again.
I’d advise caution in using this kind of “fishing expedition” to besmirch people without good reason. If there is evidence that a candidate actually carried accountability for something that was not delivered effectively – like Shaun Wright and the council’s failings on protecting Rotherham girls from sexual exploitation, as a random example – by all means, ask away of course.

Now that I have seen this I will of course respond. I have done so on Twitter too. This kind of thing is typical of Labour. The role of Police and Crime Commissioner is supposed to be non-political and yet they must make it an issue of class war, That is sad, disappointing and entirely expected.
However, I can answer the question as to where I was during the miner’s strike, I was proudly policing the mining communities of Golborne and Leigh, where I grew up. I was then promoted to Salford (Agecroft). I was therefore not sent to police the picket lines at Orgreave or elsewhere. Of course, if I had been sent I would have policed them fairly as was my duty.

It was a legitemant question which has been answered but you cant have your cake and eat it. if its right for people to comment on Shaun and the Labour Party then its equally right we look at the party that is funding your campaign. The party that has took over £60m out of RMBC budget so far and a further cut of £37m is on the cards for the next 2 years. Thats not including the Welfare reforms which will take at least £75m out of Rotherham’s economy.

Separate this role from the other issues. Policing is far too important. Hence Nigel’s insistence that it must not be a stick for Parties to beat each other with. He is passionate about policing and will not be dragged into a Party political battle.

You mention the word ‘some’ in reference to ‘serial and career claimants’; if they are serial and career claimants and they aren’t looking for work like you implied then can you tell me why only some should look for work.
cases are varied by an immense scale and for you to say that the welfare reform won’t have that much of an impact shows naievty of your comments. Welfare reform goes further then jobseeker’s. There are many groups affected and it most definitley will take money out of the local economy.
I live in one of the most deprivated parts of Rotherham so I definitley don’t wear rose tinited spectacles. I know that the vast majority of people in receipt of welfare are genuine and there struggle get’s overlooked.
You sir speak absolute tripe and your comments sound like a script written by the daily mail.

Just as a final word and not to spark this off again – just to explain where i was coming from. There are those that deserve and those that don’t, my comment about ‘some’ referred to those that don’t….i certainly am not looking at, poking the finger at those in genuine need and i didn’t want to give that impression.
I hope you can see that it’s not tripe amd i don’t read the Daily Mail 🙂
