Rawmarsh By-Election – Caven Vines States The Truth!

General Affidavit under Oath

“I, Caven Vines, Am a resident of 30,Whitley_Road_Kimberworth_Rotherham_South_Yorkshire_S61_2HL

And do hereby certify, swear or affirm, and declare that I am competent to give the following declaration based on my personal knowledge, unless otherwise stated, and that the following facts and things are true and correct to the best of my knowledge.

That I Caven Vines have never been a member of the British National Party (BNP).

I was a member of a group called Council Watch, which operated in Rotherham, from March.1999..and until I left in  September 2004 When we disbanded Council Watch …….

Marlene Guest was also a member of this group until she was asked to leave in 2003, at which time any association I had with her through Council Watch ceased.   During her time as a member of Council Watch she was a Member of the Lib/Dems and a Rotherham Independent Candidate and at some time later joined the BNP – which she still supports.   I have not had any association with the BNP or any of its members ever.”

Rothpol is surprised by this emphatic denial, that he has ever been a member of the BNP. We already know, Caven has never been a member of the BNP and no one at Rotherham Politics would wish to suggest otherwise.

This development is most intriguing and am sure readers would be interested to know why Caven felt it necessary to go as far as swearing an Affidavit?

Battle Won – The Fight Goes On!

Sandra Horridge, Secretary of the Hands Off Stubbin Lane Community Action Group, has sent us her reflections on a victory won but with the war still far from over:

From the Advertiser: Victory, But the Battle Goes On!

‘The evidence given during the local Public Inquiry held at the Drop-In Community Centre Upper Haugh on 20 and 21 November 2012 confirmed amongst other things, the deliberate attempt to acquire part of Stubbin Lane highway for the applicant’s personal use and the encouragement / lack of opposition to this by Rotherham Metropolitan Council(RMBC).

In addition, it became clear that  RMBC (as a Highway Authority) was in breach of its statutory duties and had advised the applicant to ‘stop up’ the highway following the awarding of retrospective planning permission by RMBC for a building upon land which he did not own and is a public amenity.

The applicant, Gary Watson, 11 Hoober Court, Upper Haugh, upon cross examination, admitted that the land was not part of his property, had committed the criminal offence of obstructing a public highway and removed a public right of way.

Naeem Siraj, barrister has provided advice for the next stage of the proceedings.’

Anston PC – Police called after more trouble!

Last night there was a special meeting of Anston parish council, an electors meeting.  As usual, there were many fine examples of bad behaviour. This was tolerated by the Chairman, Dominic Beck.

The real fireworks erupted once the meeting was closed however, when a clearly agitated Mr Brindley,  made a bee line from across the room and squared up to parish councillor Thornton.

Mr Brindley waved a rolled up newspaper at Mr Thornton’s face and was reported to have been visibly shaking with anger when Mr Brindley repeatedly stated “you need sorting!” This was accompanied by attempted physical intimidation, Mr Brindley was by now very agitated indeed and actually struck Mr Thornton three times across his cheek!

When attempting to strike for a fourth time, Mr Thornton pushed Mr Brindley back, with his open right hand to prevent further physical assault upon his person, this was then followed by an accusation that Mr Thornton had assaulted him and the police were called!

The rest of this sorry tale will be told once the police have completed their investigations.

You simply couldn’t make it up!

The hard work starts now!

Time now for the serious end of this exercise, identifying those Borough Councillors who have failed to declare, either some of their own interests, or those of a spouse.

Rotherham Politics publishes the second set of downloads, a few have been revised, but are still believed deficient in certain particulars.

This is one of those times that readers are also our ‘eyes and ears’, please let us know what you discover! Use either Rothpol, Rikileaks or simply leave it as a comment, from where I can pick it up.

Many of the above, in addition to being a Borough Councillor, double up by being parish or Town Councillors too. This page on the Council website allows you to check their parish interests declaration, Parish Council Interests Declarations. These days, there would have to be compelling reasons for the two not to be identical.

I was surprised then to be informed, by an ‘eagled eyed’ spotter to whom I am grateful, of distinct differences in the declarations of Judy Dalton on Anston parish council vs RMBC. Your attention is drawn to sections 1, 4 and 9, in particular.

Wonder what Theresa May made of our Shaun?

Spotted by a contributor in the Independent, thanks:

Theresa May reads the riot act to police commissioners after expenses scandals

After a slew of allegations and mishaps involving chauffeur-driven trips funded by taxpayers and embarrassing rows over staffing, the country’s newly elected but already beleaguered police leaders have been called into Whitehall to be warned of their responsibilities.

Ministers have told their police and crime commissioners that they must detail their spending and hospitality arrangements online after a new round of damaging headlines about the Conservative law and order policy. the 41 commissioners in England and Wales, each voted into office in November, were called in for a private meeting with the Home Secretary, Theresa May, and the Policing minister, Damian Green, last week following a dispute over….Read on

Rothpol would have loved to be a ‘fly on the wall’ when Theresa May met with Shaun, she can’t have been very impressed?

Rothpol can’t find Shaun’s expenses as required on the PCC’s own website: http://www.southyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/

Anston PC – Could it get worse? Yes, Robin Stonebridge turns up!

The quite delightful, LoveDinnington, has provided it’s readers with a further update after the last meeting of Anston parish council:

Anston Parish Council Branded as “Arrogant” in Formal Complaint

Robin Stonebridge attended the meeting of Anston parish council, something that has become a rarity in recent months. As sure as night follows day, Robin’s behaviour was quite outrageous, nothing new there then!

Rothpol has had sight of one of these formal complaints and it is quite clear, Robin’s words and actions were up to his usual standards and has brought further embarrassment to himself, the parish council and the labour party.

Just the kind of behaviour that would not be tolerated in the playground, never mind a parish council meeting! Surely time for a second ‘retirement’? But no further retirement presents, eh!

Mystery Over Rotherham CEO’s Salary…Solved

Interesting to see what chief executives at South Yorkshire’s four councils are paying themselves this coming financial year in light of big cuts to services and jobs. Well, interesting to see what they’re getting if you can get up-to-date figures from the councils.

Not everyone was coming clean.

Down Memory Lane

John Wilkinson has reminded us of the time when Jahangir Akhtar got his nickname.

From the Guardian:

Councillor joined drunken brawl

A Labour councillor caught up in a drunken fight in a restaurant was yesterday given 130 hours’ community service.

“Jahangir Akhtar, 41, was spared a prison term because of his record of helping community relations in Rotherham, where the row broke out between diners last September.

Hull crown court was told that Akhtar, a member of the controlling Labour group on Rotherham council, played a leading role in kicking and punching a customer. Judge Simon Lawler described the attack as “a serious incident which led to a number of people being injured and needing hospital treatment”.

After the hearing, Akhtar said he would continue as a councillor. “I will serve my community no matter what happens. Whether that is in the Labour party largely depends on the reaction today.”

The court heard that Akhtar, a taxi driver in Rotherham, went to the Minar Balti restaurant in response to a mobile phone call from his brother Tesadiq Hussein, 31, who was drunk and abusive and falsely claimed that he had been attacked by staff.

Akhtar, his son Azzizum, 20, and his brother Shabbir, a 36-year-old martial arts instructor, arrived at about 11.30pm. Fighting broke out.

“Shabbir Akhtar struck a blow to a customer eating his meal and then Jahangir Akhtar joined in the assault on him,” said Rodney Jameson, prosecuting. “The man was kicked and punched and fell to the floor and was punched again. He got a black eye.”

Judge Lawler told Akhtar that he had been given glowing references including an accolade from a former police commander in Rotherham.

Hussein was jailed for 14 months for his part in the affray; Azzizum Akhtar was given 80 hours of community service and Shabbir Akhtar 130 hours”

One is forced to question why this bully and thug was ever allowed back in the Labour Party? This man and his sons are an utter disgrace and have no place in public life!

For students of Jahangir:

What may be perfectly legal but totally unacceptable politically?

It is often the case in politics that when lawyers get involved in pursuit of their clients interests, against the wishes of a reluctant party, when it becomes public it doesn’t look good to say the least and is often … Continue reading

John Wilkinson Rotherham UKIP Defends Candidate

John Wilkinson, Rotherham UKIP, statement in full:

“Let’s be clear: the ‘Guardian’ and others have got it wrong.
Caven Vines has never been a member of the BNP.

Any working relationship with Marlene Guest finished years ago. At the time Mr Vines was on Council Watch with her it should be noted that he was an Independent councillor and she was a Lib-Dem. After working with her over 10 years ago is it wrong to speak to her when meeting in public – at the count for instance?

Just so you all know.”

Caven Vines – A little local difficulty?

Ukip stands by Rotherham local election candidate with BNP links

Party’s treatment of Caven Vines contrasts with its withdrawal of support for Cornwall candidate who had been BNP member

, northern editor, and

The Guardian, Wednesday 24 April 2013 19.35 BST

The UK Independence party’s local election candidate in Rotherham has had close links to the British National party and thinks there are too many Muslims in Britain – but having been alerted to his views and background, the party’s central command refused to condemn his remarks.

Caven Vines, 62, used to work closely with the BNP‘s Rotherham organiser, Marlene Guest, in a campaign group called Council Watch. He has never been a BNP member but spent 2004-2006 as an independent councillor for the Rotherham West ward and is well known locally for his rightwing views. Read on….

Later in the Guardian article: Jahangir Akhtar, deputy leader of Rotherham council (Labour), said when he beat Vines in Rotherham West in 2006, Vines wrote a letter to the local paper falsely accusing him of “bussing in Pakistanis” to vote for him. “Round here we say Ukip are just BNP in nicer suits,” said Akhtar. “Vines has extreme views more in line with the BNP. It exposes the lie that Ukip are a respectable, non-racist party.” Vines admits penning the letter and says Akhtar used “intimidation tactics” to win in 2006 – an accusation Akhtar denies.’
