A self appointed leader? Akhtar must have been thinking of himself when accusing Mohammed Shafiq of this.
Reminds me of Naz Ahmed, but then, Akhtar is an acolyte of the disgraced Peer from Rotherham, is he not.
Seems to me Mohammed Shafiq has more than the measure of Asbo! A convicted criminal, indeed!
Just typical of Akhtar to pretend right at the end, it was said in jest! If it was, it was certainly heavily disguised.

Having looked at both the Ramadan Foundation website and Mr Shafiq’s personal website, I have a sneaky feeing that the description “self-appointed leader” might possibly be applicable.

Mr Shafiq is however correct in saying that it was Labour (David Blunkett, I seem to remember) who introduced the (very short lived) National ID Card system into UK. It only went live in the Manchester area (as a pilot scheme) before being killed by the incoming Tory/LibDem .administration.
It was a seriously nutty idea! (IMHO).

Why do we waste our time on trivia like this. They are not in the same league as Bertrand Russell or even the Chucle Brothers. Blair was a big believer in ID cards and every time we have a tragedy it is floated as he answer irrespective who is in power. I believe the two people concerned should realise that people do not care about their religous practices as we live in a secular society. Keep your religio to yourself like Christians do. No wonder people are voting for UKIP!

My scientific hero, Isaac Newton! As for, Civil Disobedience in the 1960s Tariq Ali, riots on the Sorbonne and the Stones ‘street fighting man’, would appear to have resonance even today!

In my personal recollection the Sorbonne took a very very minor role (I’ve never understood it’s role – the only people I’ve known to go there were au-pairs studying French part-time) – the University of Paris out at Nanterre was the centre of student unrest, and le Mouff (Rue Mouffetard) in the 6th the centre of conflict (it was a narrow cobbled street in those days – you can imagine the use the kids put to those cobbles.),

If two white Christian councillors had this debate/argument on Twitter would RMBC or Akhtar comment? I need enlightenment in the ways of Labour party politics and the ‘no comment,no action’ silence of the Ed Millerband and alleged leadership of RMBC.
Akhtar provides me with more enjoyment than Morecombe and Wise.

“Gryllus assimilis!” For those who love the Big Bang Theory. As a labour member who speaks for no one except myself can I state that if the Deputy Leader is so terrible why don’t you work together to replace him at the next election? On this site there are many who dislike this councillor but seem only able to mutter and rock in their chairs which is an affront to democracy rather than collaborate to remove him.

@ Graham, too right. Your description of many of the posters in my opinion is spot on. The majority of “serial posters” on this blog are not fans of Asbo Akhtar but they carry individual petty (or in some cases justified) prejudices against a particular group. They don’t miss a single opportunity to air their views, especially if it rattles someone’s cage. In their world of getting up in the morning in a foul mood….again, crying into their cornflakes, going through the day feeling hard done by and finally posting some inane, anti-somebody comments somehow improves their life. No, I can’t see how so may individuals all pulling in different directions can achieve the downfall of Asbo Akhtar, a Deputy Leader of the Labour party. If you are serious about getting rid of Asbo we need to show that we can work as one for the greater good.
I propose we form a “anybody who wants Asbo Akhtar out” group. We could call it the Alliance Against Asbo Altar, the AAAA.
1. All members should temporarily put aside their baggage and focus on creating a consensus of opinion. ( Don’t worry you can pick up your baggage at the conclusion of the collaboration).

Work to remove Akhar is well underway, the introduction of Respect and UKIP into the field for the ward will see the traditional Labour vote move away from Akhtar, predominately to Respect with UKIP being the net beneficiaries.
His days of being able to live a life of luxury dragging in thousands of pounds from the public trough will soon be over.
There is even talk within the Labour group that the UKIP win in Rawmarsh was no bad thing, as removing some of the dead wood portfolio leads with Labour still running the council would give some of the younger ones an opportunity to take the helm and the dosh that goes with it!

That is my point . The votes will be split and Akhar will win again. Many talk about him putting himself first but so does everyone else in politics. If the people are first then show me. Everyone collaborate and let one party stand in opposition.

Shafiq is a great guy from manchester, he goes on sky news speaks up for the Muslim in this country, very honest and reliable person, he comes to Rotherham we have met loads of times, through him I have got my media skills from.
I have alot of time and respect for Shafiq from Manchester.
We will work closely with him for future great person to work with.

regular reader: Newton was a truly amazing man, but it took 150 years for this son of Grantham to have his statue erected in the town. The Thatcherites are already clamouring for one to be erected for this evil woman who divided the country and caused misery for millions who were abandoned with total calousness by her!

RMBC Standards department have, in my opinion, been misguided in their judgement. It is clear from the outset that the exchange between the two twitter combatants that each were speaking from their respective political positions as local politicians. Therefore, the complaint should have been upheld. However, both can be justly criticised for conducting a public spat that descended to personal jibes. Equally, both can be justly criticised for inconsistencies between their claimed personal opinions and their political behaviour. Failures all round.
