Please accept this as my resignation as a member of the Corporate parenting panel with mediate effect
I am concerned that every item on the agenda of this panel is marked restricted with no explanation or exception under the terms of the Local Government Act stated.
As I was elected to represent the people openly I will not be part of any panel or committee that attempts to restrict that freedom without good cause and justifiable reason or statute

  1. Are councillors CRB’d before they become councillors-as should MPs or anyone in authority-though it did not stop taht horrendous horrible cyril Smith

  2. For your information I am CRB checked but dont know if all councillors are it is not mandatory to be a councillor but I agree with you they all should be

  3. I am not surprised that meetings are held in secret with no justifiable cause. I have attended Parish/Town Council Meetings where the Public are just asked to leave, when they wish to discuss things they do not want the Electors to know about.
The Public Bodies (Admission to Meetings) Act 1960 s1 (2) is quite clear, ALL meetings of Local Authorities, Parish/Town councils, (including Committees and sub Committees) are open to the General Public. Councils can only exclude Members of the Public by a proposed Resolution and a majority vote. The Resolution must also contain the reason for exclusion, such as referring to contracts or Legal issues. This process must also happen even if no members of the Public are present. I know of one Town Council who exclude the Public without a vote whilst they discuss General Finance matters.
Well done Caven for making a stand. ( I don’t recall the Tories making such noises).
