Kevin goes for it!

This document is the first evidence that Kevin is seeking re-selection:

Rt Hon Sir Kevin Barron MP

I, Kevin Barron, was born in Hazlewood Castle, Tadcaster, and moved with my family to Maltby when I was 8 years old. I was educated at Maltby Hall Secondary School and began my working life as an underground electrician at Maltby Colliery. After studying Social Sciences at Sheffield University on a day release course I was awarded a scholarship at Ruskin College Oxford, where I gained a diploma in Labour Studies. I have been a member of the Labour Party since 1974, serving on the Regional Executive Committee for many years and also President of Rotherham Trades Council. In 1983 I was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Rother Valley, winning six subsequent elections. I am a member of Unite.

I have represented the Rother Valley for nearly 31 years and have remained committed to the constituency and its people. As promised then, I have maintained an office in the constituency, where I hold regular surgeries and meetings. Sheena and Matthew work in the office on a full time basis and I also have a part-time assistant, Natalie. Sheena has worked for me now for over 28 years and has established a friendly and approachable presence. I keep in close contact with the Rother Valley Labour Party, both at General Management Committee and Ward level. Weekends are reserved for constituency work and I keep a busy diary, making myself available to individuals and organisations; also for home visits if constituents are unable to get to my surgeries. I like to think that I have established a good rapport with local organisations such as the Rotherham NHS both primary and secondary; RMBC; Rotherham & Barnsley Chamber of Commerce; South Yorkshire Police, local businesses, schools, colleges and Trade Unions, meeting regularly to discuss both specific and general issues. In Westminster I have chaired the Standards Committee and the Privileges’ Committee since the last election. I was appointed to the Privy Council in 2001 and was awarded a knighthood in this year’s New Years Honours List. I have always been accountable, approachable and accessible. I would be privileged to be selected as your candidate to fight the next General Election.

  1. I hate to be pickie, but :
” In Westminster I have chaired the Standards Committee and the Privileges’ Committee since the last election.” Is factually incorrect.
Sir Kevin originally chaired the Standards and Privileges Committee, which was then split into the two committees at the beginning of 2013.

  2. Does Kevin live in his constituency any more, other than owning a flat here? I realise it would be unwise to publish his address, but we should know which village or town he lives in. The good news is that his majority has dropped from a peak of 50% to 12% in 2010. Kevin’s seat is ripe for the picking and a great time to eradicate One nation Labour party, that is more concerned with Common purpose than helping the British working person. Fancy being given a title by a Tory government!

    • Hi Cheers Tim
You say “The good news is that his majority has dropped from a peak of 50% to 12% in 2010″
I could go away and do the calculations myself, if you had stated the year that he got 50% …
… but the usually reliable Guardian site gives these percentages for recent years:
      http://www.theguardian.com/politics/person/262/kevin-barron
      2010 Rother Valley Labour 19,147 (41.0%)
      2005 Rother Valley Labour 21,871 (55.4%)
      2001 Rother Valley Labour 22,851 (62.1%)
      1997 Rother Valley Labour 31,184 (67.6%)
      1992 Rother Valley Labour 30,977 (60.5%)
and the actual results for 2010 were:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rother_Valley_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2010s
      General Election 2010: Rother Valley
      Party Candidate Votes % ±%
      Labour Kevin Barron 19,147 40.9 -10.6
      Conse Lynda Donaldson 13,281 28.4 +5.3
      Liberal Wesley Paxton 8,111 17.3 +1.2
      BNP William Blair 3,616 7.7 +2.8
      UKIP Tina Dowdall 2,613 5.6 +1.3
      Majority 5,866 12.5 -23.5
      Turnout 46,768 64.2 +6.5
      Labour hold Swing -8.0
      To summarise:
Wikipedia says: “Peak of 68% to 42% in 2010″
You say: “Peak of 50% to 12% in 2010″
      Now who should I trust?
Tim, I think it would be a good idea if you came up with the detailed numbers and dates behind your figures; I’m sure you’ll agree.

    • Regular reader you need to go and stand in the corner of the room or go to bed with no tea. My figures are correct if you look on Wiki. Are you a teacher or bureaucrat? Even before the government lied about the latest unemployment figures, they don’t show any where near the true unemployment levels, you have to be very careful when trusting figures, I suggest getting you anorak on and getting out in the real world. I have been struggling with Googles addwords and algorithms, it is totally flawed and google’s way of looking at the world, you can’t force people into box’s when it isn’t a true reflection, it is often somebody else’s interpretation.

  4. Hi RR,
You say “Ill do anything I can to ensure he is not re-elected”. My Idea is, lets find someone to actually dress up in a Monkey suit, pull on red socks , and go and meet the people.
It worked in Hartlepool, the Monkey won.

      It figures!
Certainly the only time I ever won a fancy dress competition was as Kermit the Frog – when the judges couldn’t see who was behind the mask,
(British Embassy Club , Addis Ababa, circa 1985) .

  5. Arguing figures is just pedantic semantics what is really important is organising against him in our constituency. It is interesting in his crawling CV to the local Labour party he only briefly mentions mining and says nothing of his NUM career, he says nothing about having been the delegate at Maltby pit; taking over from the late Sir Jack Layden. He steers well clear of him having started his political career as a NUM sponsored candidate and MP. As one would expect he stays very quiet about him being booted out of the NUM hence his UNITE membership. Barron is a mealy mouthed careerist who has no feeling for his constituents unless it benefits him, Sir Nutkin has no shame and I am sure many in the Labour Party are sorry that he has decided to stand however a year in politics is a long time.

  6. Arguing figures is just pedantic semantics what is more important is organising against him in our constituency. It is very illuminating that he brushes quickly over his time in mining, he makes no mention of his time in the NUM; unlike in his television appearance where he attempts to character assassinate the NUM strike leadership. He was quick to point out then that he had been a member of the executive committee. Sir Nutkin does not say that he was the NUM delegate at Maltby pit taking over from Sir Jack Layden, there must be something in the water at Maltby. As expected he leaves out the part about beginning his political career as a NUM sponsored candidate then MP. As also expected he steers well clear of being booted out of the NUM, hence his membership of UNITE, as usual for Sir Nutkin any port in a storm. Barron is just a mealy mouthed careerist who cares nothing for his constituents unless it gains him something, there will be quite a few Labour Party members who will be sorry that he has decided to stand. However a year is a long time in politics.

  7. Dave what is the alternative to Barron in Rothervalley. The only choice I can see is UKIP and I don’t go for the bull they are Tories. I am an ex Tory, but believe that the minimum wage for a 21 year old should be £10 a hour. If we are creating jobs that are only worth £6-30 a hour, why bother, they are worthless jobs or somebody is profiteering and not paying the workers fairly. it is not up to the government to top up workers pay with welfare.

    • Well said Upstart when Mahroof Hussain was kicked out and not selected for Labour Party in 2012 he was promised the seat of Rother Valley of Kevin Barron MPs.
Sajid Bostan, Vakas Hussain and Mubeen Hussain were instructed by Mahroof Hussain and Janghir Akhtar to take down all the Labour Party banners/sign posts in Broom overnight in 2012 MPs election to humiliate the Labour Party.
When Mahroof played the Race card with Labour party they assured him he will be elected to replace Kevin Barron MP.
I would rather have Kevin than Moofy duck and Dive and smelly Asbo.

      • Dave. I couldn’t reply to your comment on your blog, have you switched off comments. As far as I know UKIP will use private companies where it provides a cheaper and better service, but point of service will be free in the NHS. They will even be allowing free eye tests and check ups for teeth. UKIP turned me down as a candidate for Rothervalley, they did say that they already had some body in place, but I would always put the constituency first, which is something they couldn’t control. But I fully endorse UKIP on referendums, I want to see true Swiss style democracy. But I believe in fairer spreading of wealth, rather than than the 1% holding on to 90% of the wealth. I also believe in sustainable communities and not centralisation. To break Kevin’s hold on Rothervalley, is an Independent with my philosophy, with four teams to deal with the major conurbations across Rothervalley. I am certainly not into political correctness dogma or H&S quango’s, you certainly don’t need to wear an hard hat when climbing a ladder like my Sky engineer did.. Cheers Tim

      • Kickstart I was aware of a nod and wink deal between Moofy and the labour party. Kevin won’t play ball or is it a move to put pressure on for his ennoblement? Baron Barron would seem suitable? Moofys team is putting pressure on for a rethink. I understand, Mahroofs own credibility is on the line too with his own supporters and constituents.

    • The fuss about his (Barron) daughter, Dave ? Could you elaborate, please ? If Amy Rushforth is not intended to take over from her father then the Labour Party must think they can get a few more years out of our Kev. Something to do with the knighthood perhaps ?
