Unless Labour decides to dump their own dinosaurs, this is the list of sitting Labour Councillors who will be up for re-election/voting out next May:

  2. Oh my Lord. Where do I begin. Bar a few and I mean a few, this list is full of some very tired and useless candidates. If the Rotherham Labour Party do not get some new blood in then I can see UKIP easily bag 11/12 seats off this list. We will watch with keen interest, will the Labour Party bring in some new and passionate blood or will they go with this deck of cards. UKIP must be licking their lips.

  3. I agree Andy with your point. I am not someone who is swayed by parties but I am willing to give UKIP the benefit of the doubt here. But what I would say to UKIP is to also consider their candidates because this years batch are awfully similar to the Labour dinosaurs in many ways. If UKIP can offer up some really dynamic and fresh candidates then they will easily take down these dinosaurs.

    P.S. As someone who considers myself to have a sufficient knowledge of local politics through this blog and the Rotherham Advertiser I am deeply shocked to have honestly not heard of quite a few of these Councillors before. They do not seem to be active. Dinosaur by nature.

Personally I am no UKIP fan but I do agree that it will be to their advantage to offer up some dynamic and fresh candidates as you put it because it has to be without doubt that the local Labour Party will be complacent as ever and offer up the tedious list of candidates up above. Your last point has made me think though. I also consider myself kept up to date with local politics and I have no clue who some of the candidates are. Have they been in a cave all this time. I am on the council website now to look at who these supposed Councillors are. I have no clue who the Councillors up above are for the following wards. Boston castle, Brinsworth and Catcliffe, Hoober, Keppel, Maltby, Rother Vale, Wath, Wickersley and Wingfield. Has the admin got any information of these hermit Councillors?

    • Why would you have heard of any of the councillors (other than the one in your ward)? If they are doing the job they were elected to then they will be busy in their ward rather than grandstanding and poking their noses into other wards a la Caven Vines and Eastwood. Good ward councillors aren’t necessarily houshold names.

  5. Labour lost in Silverwood and Valley this year. If this was to happen again next year then Leader and Deputy leader would be lining up for their giro’s.

    I am in the same boat as you. Not heard of any of these apart from the one from Brinsworth. They look like the inhabitants of a sleepy little village in the Cotswolds. UKIP just have to play there cards right and it will be easy to beat this lot as they can not possibly expect people to believe they are up to the task in hand.

I have just read letters in the advertiser and it seams labour supporters have not learnt anything even sarah champion is spouting the same old rubbish when are they going to realise people are so fed up with what we get year in year out what we want is a party who is for us not themselves i would like to see ukip do this and hope they get more seats next year on the council

  10. In Dinnington we can expect the same thing from Jane Havenhand as we did this time from her sister Jacquie Falvey nothing. When I was out on the street of Dinnington and on the door steps no one knew who our councillors were. A word of advice for Jane Havenhand get out of the resource centre and meet the people you are supposed to represent or go the same way as your sister next year. I don’t believe Labour in our area will have learnt any lessons from this years council elections because every one is to blame bar them. It would be a rare treat if next year Labour had the guts to hold public meetings during the election along with any other candidates that may be standing.

  12. Rumor has it around Town Hall Towers that up to eight of these will be changed by voluntary means or selection. Many heads are worried that some of these candidates do not have it in them to fight the seats where they had lost this year and those seats that scraped by with less than a majority of 100. Another one circulating the Town Hall is that Tory Cllr John Gilding will defect to UKIP to save his own scalp.

  14. Thanks Dave and Good Luck! Cllr Havenhand’s brother’s attempt at intimidation can add to my previous list. What a batch of bullies we have here. Possibly the worst line up Labour has had to offer us to date.

  15. I understand in those wards where all 3 labour cllrs are male. Then they will be forced to put a female up next year?

    Can anyone clarify?
    as may not be hugely popular in forcing change and possibly unlikely to find enuf willing females to stand?

  16. Labour gone is far the best result for Rotherham. The false accusations of UKIP being a racist party is just false and lies spread by these Labour idiots. Conservative is the best way forward for United Kingdom, If we want to keep the uniqueness. Labours idea of Wasting money and increasing benefits only makes the inflation rise in the long run.

    And please people of Rotherham, I beg of you to vote for, at least a person that can speak clear English. .

  18. What you all seem to be forgetting is that the next local elections will be on 7 May 2015 – the same day as the General Election.
    UKIP may well gain seats in Rotherham at the 2015 local elections, but the turnout with be much higher than the 30-odd% it was two weeks ago, and many people will have the national economic and social policies (not Europe and immigration) of the Government parties and Labour in their mind when they vote – with many reverting to their traditional party (whether you like it or not, many people are tribal).
    UKIP will also come under even more scrutiny as the General Election draws near. No doubt some of the ‘crackpot’ councillors (local?) will have come out with all kinds ridiculous things between now and then (all you need to do is look at the UKIP MEPs that were elected in 2009 to see how many were still UKIP candidates in 2014 to realise that they have some issues with discipline and reality), while their policies will be revealed for all to see.
    So, the chances of a similar success for UKIP in Rotherham will be much reduced, as their ‘core’ vote will be swamped by the higher turnout voting for Labour.
    The best bet for UKIP is that good old European, un-British, approach of proportional representation. Oh, the irony.

Andrew: If Labour don’t offer a referendum on the EU, and the Cons only offer jam tomorrow and the Libdems rely on there only having to be one if there is a major transfer of power to Brussels; who else can give the significant proportion of the electorate that want a referendum what they want and also immigration is so far up the political agenda that the voters are hardly likely to dismiss the issue as being of no consequence when they cast their vote!

      • Me: How do you know the people who have posted on here are tenants- don’t you mean residents? I played my very small part in helping to remove Asbo a despicable person who should never have been a Councillor, Don’t forget when every one thought he was a dead duck after his conviction for violence he reappeared. It’s up to all of us to make sure he doesn’t come back again! Oh and just what part are you playing in sorting the council out?

    A very patronising statement.
    Why is the Labour party still in power in Rotherham? Simple; Because people would not get off their backsides and vote. It does’nt matter who you vote for it is more important to exercise your democratic right to vote, a right millions of people have died for.
    ‘me’ should also realise and accept Rotherham is still a Labour stronghold with 50 Labour councillors but until voters want to change the balance of power change will not happen.
