Hot off the Press – UKIP ask further questions

UKIP have been busy.

This is the second of the day:

Dear Rotherham Politics

Attached is a Press Release issued this afternoon by UKIP Rotherham.
The Press Release stems from letters Councillor Caven Vines has sent to Paul Lakin, Leader of RMBC.This Press Release raises questions about how Ofsted Inspectors were so misled in 2011 that they considered Rotherham’s safeguarding to be a strength!

Yours sincerely

  1. What a futile ‘press release’. Huffing and puffing about what should be done, but offering nothing to suggest how, but can categorically state who shouldn’t be involved.. How can Rotherham sort its own mess out when everyone in authority at any level is (allegedly) culpable? If no one from any similarly affected authority can be involved in investigations, who is going to do it? How can central government be trusted to do it when they have covered up wrongdoing at that level for years (Cyril Smith most obviously). According to Ukip, everyone who isn’t Ukip is involved in a conspiracy – councillors, MPs, officers. So who is going to provide the bone fide list he thinks is ‘the first step’ that can be trusted? How will we know the list has all the right people on it? And if such a failsafe list CAN be provided, what exactly is the next step? Presumably there are lessons to be learnt from the Sharon Shoesmith debacle where politicians screwed up by acting illegally – or do we only want to kneejerk in haste, and pay up for the screw up later?.
So how are the legally protected people who the Ukip people would like to see in court or hanging from a lamp post going to be tackled? Simple answer is that for all the bluster, its not going to happen. Some of the remaining councillors may be voted out in May, but none of the officers or police will be going anywhere soon. Like it or not, they have legal rights too.
If you’re going to issue press releases, why not try being a little more constructive, such as suggesting legal and workable policies, procedures and action plans that can be delivered to prevent future CSE, and ensuring transparency and accountability in such systems. Come up with concrete, thoughtful proposals for protecting the existing victims, and making the town safer, and less vulnerable to this sort of crime. How to rebuild – or even build from scratch – community trust, because all we see at the moment is endless hostility and name calling.
eg. CCTV in all taxis that cannot be tampered with – to protect drivers from assault, and passengers from any/all criminal behaviour. Whoever gets elected as the next PCC could authorise this, and who amongst the taxi drivers could possibly object (if they’re honest that is)? And if they refuse, then their licenses are revoked.
CCTV on all school gates and entrance areas to local authority homes and schools that is monitored 24/7, and to a standard that evidence thus produced will be accepted in court.
Local people will be full of ideas to improve things, and most would rather be involved in positive planning than never-ending negativity.

    • A wise and thoughtful post.

The idea that UKIP are some sort of moral bastion against the “paedophile protectors” of Labour is laughable. Had they been running the council they would have been just as prone to the groupthink and wilful blindness that let this horrible story happen.

  2. Empty posturing. Are you going to post every two-bit “press release” that the esteemed Cllr Vines knocks up in 2 minutes on Microsoft Word.

  3. The Labour party has issued a Press statement expressing the party’s outrage at what has and is happening in Rotherham. The statement has been endorsed by Ed.Miliband:

    Fascinating huh?.

      • No.
It is meant to be an empty space! (Tongue firmly in cheek)
It highlights the ‘caring, sharing’ face of the Labour party and its pathetic response to the scandal that has engulfed their Rotherham bretheren. At the present time I have the impression Sarah Champion is doing all the dirty work on behalf of the Ed Millerband.
I think you will agree the lack of response by Labour Party HQ is not doing them any favours.

  4. I won’t comment on the substance. However, I do wonder why Councillor Vines expects that others will answer his questions, when he simply fails to answer questions put to him. Still waiting.
