Sarah Champion – The Red Interview

My attention was brought to the following interview of Rotherham’s MP, Sarah Champion for Red Magazine.

It is as wide ranging as it is revealing, but was she wise to be quite so candid as to her future intentions?

  1. Says she didn’t know scale of it till publication of the Jay Report, obviously never saw the Times report of September 2012 two years previously then(details of which were reprinted in the Mail)

“.Among the papers is a confidential 2010 police intelligence report warning that thousands of sexual exploitation crimes are committed in South Yorkshire each year. Possibly the most shocking threat is the existence of substantial and organised offender networks that groom and exploit victims on a worrying scale,’ the report states. ‘Practitioners throughout the force state there is a problem with networks of Asian offenders both locally and nationally.

This was particularly stressed in Sheffield and even more so in Rotherham, where there appears to be a significant problem with networks of Asian males exploiting young white females.’

The report, seen by The Times, states that such groups are believed to have trafficked victims to other cities and towns, including Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford and Dover.”

Thames Valley Police are certainly making an impact

“Buckinghamshire groomed girl abused by 60 men in ‘ring of horror'”

I make that the 4th such group prosecution

There was the major Oxford case(2013), the unsuccessful High Wycombe prosecution(2013) and this from last year

“THE ringleader of a gang who sexually abused a schoolgirl has been jailed for thirteen and a half years – and three other men have also been handed lengthy prison terms.

Nazakat Mahmood was handed his sentence at Reading Crown Court on Friday after a jury had previously convicted him of seven counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity”

That’s good going – SYP and WMP should hang their heads in shame, as their performance presents a sorry contrast indeed

  2. Parsonage says “[Sarah Champion] Says she didn’t know scale of it till publication of the Jay Report, obviously never saw the Times report of September 2012 two years previously then (details of which were reprinted in the Mail) ” and then goes off on his well researched but totally off-topic regular rant.
    What is actually written is:
“Champion says until the Jay report she had no idea of the scale of sexual abuse in Rotherham. Few people did. There were five convictions in 2010 and other cases were exposed by
The Times reporter Andrew Norfolk, but the endemic nature of the problem was concealed. In retrospect Champion understands why she was treated as the enemy by councillors from her own party: they feared this nosy outsider woman would expose them.”

    • RR, to my comparatively untutored eye, Parsonage seems to be bang-on topic. And it seems to me, that any Labour Councillor’s fears of exposure by Ms Champion were groundless…she clearly wasn’t nosy enough to ask the right questions. In fact the word that comes to mind, is ‘clueless.’

      • Now she been re-elected, and claim she wouldn’t stand again, let’s see if she will out the Labour Party members responsible for this tradegy .

  3. This interview is dated June 2015, but how does it differ from this one dated April 2015?

In the topic header the writer writes “It is as wide ranging as it is revealing, but was she wise to be quite so candid as to her future intentions?”.
None of this about her future intentions was new,and as for her being “candid”, well “disarmingly open and honest” is how I would tend to phrase it.

    • This article was published by Red Magazine in order to introduce Sarah Champion as a part of the Judges Panel, for this years Woman of the year award. It does contain material previously published by Red. It is still topical, which is why I felt justified in publication.

The words were mine and are not unreasonable in the circumstances. Think I have better things to do, than argue the toss, over descriptive words I used in posts, Rik.
