One way or the other this isn’t going to end pretty

We are slowly slowly coming towards a bit of a stand off here.

For most of my taxi driving colleagues this whole anger against the council is against a massive escalation in costs. For those who see an opportunity, they’re using that drivers anger and telling them they must protest against the council – because they know if the drivers don’t then if they’re base owners then they potentially face going out of business.

For all those people posting on social media and blogs in favour of CCTV, drivers do not want to pay for it. The majority of drivers do not believe they should nor do they believe that they make enough money to pay for it either. This might seem difficult to your average person with an opinion on the Internet to understand but purely from an economical point of view, CCTV in taxis in Rotherham makes no financial sense. It’s an unnecessary cost. Having it brings ‘other’ benefits like the safety of both the driver and passengers buy purely from a financial side, if you can’t afford it then why have one put in?

The majority of people who post on social media and blogs want this CCTV whether or not they even use taxis. The families of those CSE victims have asked for CCTV (and quite rightly so). The vast majority of drivers are saying to the council ‘you want us to have CCTV, you pay for it’. And I can honestly say that every customer i’ve spoken to who’s got in my taxi has either said they don’t want to be on CCTV or if it has to be there then they don’t see why the council aren’t paying for it.

So this is probably what’s going to happen. Some drivers will grudgingly accept CCTV. Myself, I’d rather focus on its benefits then dwell too long on the costs or negatives.

Some won’t and they will pack up and give up the industry. Others will get together and launch legal action against the council. Because they feel enough is enough. It’s getting too expensive to be able to drive a taxi here. Certainly, the days of the part time taxi driver will be over. The only way to make it pay will be to work full time (any regulations about monitoring of hours will be fought aswell – we’re self employed, the council has no right to tell anyone self employed when they can and can’t work).

One of the articles on the Sheffield Star website said the council were in ’embryonic’ discussions with other local councils about them taking on the new legislation. Which at the moment is a huge mistake.

It’s not launching here with any great fanfare so why attempt it anywhere else until it has been shown it can work here first? There are already rumours about taxi drivers going on strike in Barnsley and all that’s triggered that is the ’embryonic discussions’. Certainly, the more drivers who get annoyed and join any legal action the worse these councils will look if they lose it.

And then the future. Imagine the council do win. Everything is ratified. What will happen then is more drivers will pack up and leave the industry. They just won’t pay.

Some drivers don’t even want base owners to put the fares up to cover CCTV costs because they think they’ll also put the radio rent up. And this is where it starts to make a bit more sense.

Over 5 years the CCTV works out potentially at another £7 a week. For some taxi drivers that’s still too much. And before you start clicking those fingers and getting ready to respond with any vitriol, just remember this.

How many of you have changed your credit card or energy supplier or mobile phone contract to get a better deal? I’ve just changed my energy supplier from E-on to EDF and i’m going to save £30 a month. Nobody out there would do anything other than praise me for being sensible. And why should taxi drivers be any different. Why should the drivers pay out more than they need to?

And then it comes down to the bottom line. This isn’t even really about the costs. It’s about drivers being told what to do. The RPHDA aren’t thinking about the customers here who pay our wages. Most taxi drivers don’t. Most see the customer as an irrelevance, interrupting their time.

For some taxi drivers, the customer service is none existent. The cars are filthy. The want the customer to conform to the way THEY want to drive them – as opposed to providing a customer focused service.

The only people that make the best of this situation is the one who makes the best of it and put the customer first. Not themselves.

Those that can’t will get out of the industry. There might not be many drivers left this time next year.

One way or the other this isn’t going to end pretty.

  1. In Rotherham there is a special case for CCTV for obvious reasons but also to prevent people fooling the tax payer – just a “spy in the cab”… VEHICLE [and driver] TRACKING SYSTEM.
Unfortunately many people come to this country to TAKE, and play by their (foreign) rules.
people falsely claim hours to get benefits…
Taxi are cheaper than the bus (2 people+)
Maybe the council could negotiate a bulk rate for CCTV and maybe offer low interest loans?

    • The council do have access to low interest funding but this might be for infrastructure purposes.

If the council could bulk buy and offer low interest loans it certainly puts the boot back onto RPHDA and gives them less of a reason to strike and protest.

  2. They keep complaining about the costs, but what about to the costs to the victims of CSE , their families. What about the costs to the poor old decent Rotherham citizen, the cost of revamp the council services, from Child Protection to Licenseing. What about the millions being spent by the Police, NCA investigating these crimes, the potential costs of the town being sued, by victims and their families of CSE. The costs of the court cases, the only people rubbing their hands with glee are all those, soon to be rich leeches(Solicitors), who will be making loads of dosh. What about the cost of inward investment, what company in there right mind would want to be associated with a town with some 300 rapists/child abusers running around and some 1400+ victims. And what about the cost to the towns reputation, will it ever be known other than the town where white, innocent, underage children (girls) were rape on an industrial scale by groups of Pakistani Taxi drivers.

Think about the damage you’ve done and count yourself lucky that there only asking for CCTV, personally I wouldn’t step into a taxi, even with a barge pole, especially if I was white and a young girl.

You might have some old granny sat in the back of your car agreeing to all your aggressive talk of being the victims and bleating on about expenses and how you don’t/won’t be paying for the CCTV… Get real and accept it and start adjusting your budgets..You just saved £30 on your fuel bills… what a joke..
There’s too many Taxis anyway in this town anyway… Just get rid of the peados and criminals driving the general public around and that might be a start.

  4. It is a disproportionate invasion of individuals’ privacy to constantly record the images and conversations of taxi drivers and their passengers, the UK’s data protection watchdog has said.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said images within taxis should only be recorded where it is “clearly justifiable” to do so, and added that it would be rare for it to be acceptable to make audio recordings in the vehicles.
“The Data Protection Act states that organisations can only collect personal data when it is fair and lawful to do so,” the ICO said. “For CCTV equipment in taxis, the ICO advises that images should only be recorded where it is clearly justifiable. Audio recordings should only be made on very rare occasions, for example where there are a high number of serious incidents and where recording is triggered due to a specific threat in a taxi cab.”
The ICO considered that the recording systems had resulted in the unlawful processing of both personal data and sensitive personal data. The Data Protection Act requires organisations to take particular care when processing sensitive personal data, which can include information about individuals’ political opinions, religious beliefs, physical or mental health or condition or sex life, among other examples.

A question if anyone can answer. Don’t Stagecoach now runs buses between Sheffield, Chesterfield and Matlock that have CCTV with audio recording? I thought I saw it advertised on the side of the bus that it did as I dropped in Sheffield a few days ago. If they do and that’s legal than it must be legal in taxis.

The whole situation is a farce.

Would you please write your thought down and send them to the Prime Minister and try to open his eyes to what these people are doing. They infect and infest our country with their primitive ways and culture and insist on inflicting it on us, using the race laws to force us accept it. I had dealings with these people throughout my working life and I ALWAYS found them to be dishonest, corrupt, extremely tribal and extremely racist, refusing to integrate into our society. They and their culture are evil and it should be eradicated from our society by whatever means are necessary. If this means deportation of whole families, including those born here, then so be it.

For the last two decades you are referring to I can confirm I have sent endless letters in confidence to superintendents, senior command teams at South Yorkshire police, senior council officials all to no avail. Why didn’t anyone take any notice? Maybe the mirpuri councillors white counterparts were too much up each other’s back sides they just didn’t want to know or simply didn’t care what was going on with the most vulnerable in our society. Maybe they thought they not worth it just because most of these girls are picked up from dis functional families.

I’m not endorsing what the mirpuris have done, but I do blame the council, the police and any other influential person of rotherham for there failings in bringing these scums to justice. I currently don’t have much faith in the justice system, and believe most of the accused and perhaps even charged individuals won’t be actually convicted of the alleged offences.

With regards to letting these people commit these atrocities and getting away with it – I can only blame the senior command team at South Yorkshire police, and the management at R.M.B.C who were fully aware of the situation but failed to act upon it.

Let’s hope the commissioners do a better job and lead the way to a prosperous future for rotherham.

The casey and jay report simply take into account of the victims statements, and as such there report is based on the probability of the crimes reported. The reports identified systematic failings in the local authority –

however to secure a conviction in the court of law the jury must find the accused guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Lets be honest these crimes that have been brought to light are historic, and no doubt evidence would have been misplaced.. lost… stolen or simply just not available or even permissable in front of his or her honourable judge. So it would be victims word against the accused. Please correct me if the law has changed.

We need to unite pakistanis or no pakistanis, white or black against this revolting attitude towards those whom are vulnerable in our society – to gain the trust of other communities we need to step up and accept our community leaders have misrepresented us, failed to recognise that there is a problem within the mirpuri clan – and to comply with any reasonable request to better our taxi service as recently been approved by the cabinet.

  11. To the last anonymous blogger. How I’m I to know what goes on in the community, contrary to popular belief, we the Pakistani community are a minority within a minority. Do you know what happens in your community? Do you condemn the constant paedophiles who get convicted of offences in the white British community? Why do you turn a blind eye to these paedophiles? Because just like me, you don’t know what happens in the rest of the community. We don’t live in each others pockets! I work, come home and look after my family, like all law abiding citizens. What happens in these hollows where the deprived paedophiles live and do I have no idea about.
It’s all good pointing the finger at the Pakistani community but it’s not the Pakistani community which committed these offences. All of the convicted paedophiles who have appeared in the news are all mirpuri. The majority of the asain community in Rotherham is mirpuri, so all I’m doing is pointing out the facts, whilst you are too busy making general sweeping comments on a topic which you probably have very little understanding on.

    • Totally agree that one can not make everything about ones communtiy, however blameing a certain sect, within a communtiy or generalising, that a certain problem, paedophiles are common with society, will not adsorb your community of your responiability to all of the communtiy, regardless of Religion, Creed or sex.

The fact is, there were certain peoples within. Your communtiy leaders, imams, councillors, MP’s and others , who knew exactly what was going on and did nothing to stop it. This was because irrespective of what sect you came from, your community view a child, from another race, as inconsequential and therefore “Easy White Meat”. The Koran preaches that certain peoples can be treated as slaves.

If this was an isolated incident of maybe comparable to the general levels of child abuse, within society, that would be bad enough. But it was over 1400+ in a small town, over decades, and it was widespread around the country. Sorry something is very wrong with you Pakistani and it’s time you fess up to your inadequacies as human beings.

And how naive has the local authority proved to have been in this regard.

With regards to your quote from the koran – i urge you to read it in the full context and not just an extract- the koran does NOT endorse such crimes towards different races or any human. Regarding the wording ‘slave’ is referring to ones marital partner.

      • I find it very unlikely that the perpetrators of these crimes kept the meter running while they were transporting and abusing children. There would be no point in having cctv unless it was on all the time. For the taxi drivers who are innocent of any wrong doing, then yes it intrudes on your privacy and will be annoying but you’ve only got the guilty ones to blame for this. You can’t blame the commissioners for wanting to protect the public, especially children when using taxis.
I have to work under constant cctv surveillance and I don’t care one bit as I’ve got nothing to hide and it strikes me as the vast majority of taxi drivers feel the same way due to the small percentage of taxi drivers that took part in the ludicrous go slow around town and subsequent protests. Do you not think that the police (and it’s about time) or other interested parties won’t be taking a keen interest in these protesters as they’re making a huge issue about it when everyone else is happy to go along with it.
As for intruding on your personal privacy, do you really think the powers that be are particularly interested in you and your family having a normal conversation? It will be totally disregarded. It’s not there to watch your every move, it’s there so if someone makes an accusation then it can be corroborated. It will also be used to see if the money taxi drivers are declaring matches with the actual fares that have been received. I think this is the main reason for the protest, even above the CSE.

As a white British who has lived happily in mixed communities and made a little effort to understand our fellow Brits of differing ethnicity and colour there is plenty on the internet to help understand the differing cultures and histories of the the Mirpuri, who associate with being from Azad Kashmir, and those who see themselves of Pakistani origin.

A bit of googling will reveal that a number of analysts and commentators, white and Mirpuri, acknowledge that Mirpuri are the group most associated with street grooming.

They are also the in many ways the most confusing and splintered in terms of their relationship with the UK, the elders at least being most likely to hang on to contacts, culture and attitudes from back home.

      • You don’t want to live in a multi-cultural society but you want to live in Britain. Go back 200 or so years and ask the people of the countries that Britain invaded and took over if they wanted the British ruling them?

People are people. Makes no different where they are born, where they come from or where they die. Stop being so narrow minded.

  17. We are drifting off the issue hear somewhat, everyone on this site knows the real reason for not wanting CCTV in the taxis is purely and simply because they don’t want anyone to know how much they earn and how many hours they work. Forget about CSE they couldn’t care less all that matters to them is protecting their benefit scams. Simple!

  18. It all depends on your insurance policy. If you’re a registered taxi driver then you’ve also got to be insured for personal use as well. Any other drivers of a registered taxi have also got to be registered taxi drivers (no unregistered family members) or your insurance is null and void. This also goes for non declaration of any criminal record held by drivers which also leaves them liable for prosecution. One small point. Having a CCTV system installed in a taxi can knock up to £500 a year off insurance premiums. As this is more than the £7 a week for the CCTV system, then the cost is no longer an issue. So what’s the real reason?

  19. The reason is Taxman…… They don’t want anyone to know anything about their earnings or hours so they can keep scaming the system. Simple.

  20. Rotherman said it earlier. The obvious reason for not wanting CCTV is a financial one. Taxi drivers will have to declare all their earnings. It will be interesting to see if when after CCTV is installed, how many drivers earnings miraculously go up from £200 a week to £500 as they won’t be able to hide it anymore. Taxi drivers who already pay their way will be vindicated and can carry on as before with nothing to hide. Let’s see the ones who’s wages jump a mile explain that away. They should be investigated for tax evasion, we can always hope.
To be honest, any taxi driver only making £200 a week must be only working 2 days a week or are we to believe they only make £30 -40 a day? What’s this, about 8 fares? They must think we’re stupid? Oh right, they do.

    • At the same time it will put a stop to the multiple drivers scam and prevent these non licenced drivers or worse, those whose licences have or may soon be revoked, from driving a taxi about all using one ID. If it doesn’t do that as well, it will have been a waste of time? Well done Commissioner Ney!

    • The days of making £100 a day are long gone in Rotherham.

Two years ago that was the case. It’s not anymore.

Whether it’s the recession or the CSE scandal or a combination or whatever, the days of making £100 a day after costs are a pipe dream now.

When I have the CCTV installed it’ll show me parked up sat in my car sighing at some of the narrow minded comments on here and getting bored of listening to the same old adverts on Talk Sport.

There is no exuse of wat the suggestion are the truth is the the council and the police didn’t do there job right and now they haven’t got anybody else to blame apart from the taxi drivers not all the taxi driver are the same same as the doctors or the mp’s that commit these kind of crime so that means all of them are the same this is a joke ashame on u all

      • You’re right, the police and council didn’t do their jobs. It amounted to a cover up. But if certain taxi drivers hadn’t been abusing children then there would have been nothing to cover up. I know very well it wasn’t all taxi drivers, I’m not a fool, but you and many others don’t seem able to admit that any ANY taxi drivers were behind the rape and trafficking of children.

  22. When I wrote the original post, I did not expect for one second that it would generate this many replies. Some debate can be healthy but this has also been an excuse for some people to get across a lot of narrow minded views about the whole affair.

I wish the council now would stop dithering and let us drivers who are actually prepared to put the CCTV in straightaway, what we have to do. Last I have heard is that 5 different companies have put in bids to be the preferred companies to supply and fit the CCTV and that the council will pick 2 out of 5. I don’t know anything about which companies have bid and what the official costs are going to be.

One of my colleagues from the firm I work for went down to Riverside House yesterday and asked to speak to licensing and he was told what I stated in the above paragraph. He was also told that the council do expect a lot of drivers to hand their badges back in with these new regulations. I’ve always thought that was the case anyway, this was a roundabout way to bring down the numbers of drivers. That’s why the drivers wanted to go on strike. One driver may have a different reason to go on strike than another but the underlying reason is that for those who had nothing to do with CSE, they feel the council is going to shaft them to protect the public.

I completely agree. Public safety must be paramount. Hence i’ve never had an issue with CCTV. The tax issue isn’t an issue for me either as I pay mine. I don’t have to suddenly go out and get a new car either but if I did I may have been minded to vote for the strike too as it’s a cost issue.

I’m going to leave it at that. No matter what I say, for most of you on here i’m guilty by association. I tried to state some facts in the original piece about what was going to happen and how drivers were feeling. There’s no sympathy for us – any of us, guilty or innocent and certainly some of you can’t even distinguish one from the other here. And especially for those who can’t do that, I leave you with this….

    • I can fully understand that you think people feel you’re guilty by association just due to the fact that you’re a taxi driver but I assure you it’s not the case. I’m a white British man and am not, nor ever have been racially prejudiced. These morons from Britain First cause as much damage to the British white race as they do to anyone else who lives here, as we are perceived to also be guilty by association just due to being white. I’ve read the comments on Rothpol and can spot racism from a mile away as I’m sure you can and they irritate me to death as racism is completely pointless. No one can change their ethnicity so just get along eh?
Let’s just say that if it was a majority of white taxi drivers who’d been identified as abusing children, the taxi service would still have been hit and the changes implemented would still be going ahead, so this is where race is not an issue. It just happens to have been Asian taxi drivers but the result is still the same. It’s the cover up from Councillor’s and the Police and all-round denial that’s compounded all this. If the perpetrators of these crimes had originally been arrested and dealt with at the time when they were supposed to have been, race would never have been such a big issue and we wouldn’t have the likes of Britain First and the completely brain-dead EDL coming to Rotherham.
If the police now do their jobs and apprehend the right people it will leave everyone else to get on with their lives. The victims should hopefully get some closure, taxi drivers will be able to stop having a guilt complex and the public will feel comfortable getting in a taxi without some having to take photos of the car before they get in and recording conversations (yes, it does happen).
Get your CCTV installed and bide your time and eventually it will all get back to normal.
      Good Luck. Taxman.

  23. Taxman, it’s simple what their suggestions would be. Firstly, “You are only picking on us because we are Asian”, then it’s “Leave us alone to continue raping your children, transporting them round the country for sexual purposes, abusing the tax system so that we can continue evading tax, buying up multiple properties so we can abuse our tenants and just leave us alone so we can continue to put 2 fingers up to the rest of the population and keep our disgusting culture!!”
    Any other ideas?

Anyway things could be looking for people wanting taxis in Rotherham, “Uber Cars” have started in Sheffield, every fare is payed on card or app so no cash changes hand. It wrongs with respect to uber in Leeds taking over Leeds a city Rotherham isn’t and wats happening to uber in France and Germany the struggling to keep it running it will happen here after some time people wouldn’t able to afford running the taxi so it will have to be income support let the state pay for them

      • We can’t have the state supporting taxi drivers who don’t earn enough. Who can’t afford CCTV. Who can’t afford a new car. Otherwise you will have some readers and posters to this blog choking on their breakfast and reacting violently after drinking their daily umpteenth can of Stella….

Sad news today about potential job losses at the Tata steel plants – however armed with their redundancy pay i’d hope some of those workers come into the taxi industry where they will be used to the higher cost of operating a taxi from day one and with it bring a different positive outlook on service and standards benefitting passengers all round.

    • I’m generalising. I’m doing it in jest obviously. I’m not stupid enough to know all people of a white ethnic background act the same.

On the other hand certain people who post on here can’t distinguish between an honest taxi driver and a criminal.
