Exclusive: Theft of council laptop with names and addresses of abused girls kept secret from Rotherham victims

The theft of a laptop containing the names and addresses of Rotherham child abuse victims was kept secret from those affected by council and police bosses, The Star can reveal.

Twenty-one laptops were stolen from Rotherham Council’s Norfolk House offices on the night of October 26, 2011 – with no signs of a break-in.

Emails reveal how Rotherham Council bosses ‘covered up’ laptop theft details

Rotherham Council bosses decided to keep secret details of laptop thefts from their offices – despite being aware that ‘significant amounts of confidential information’ relating to a child abuse investigation and young people in care had been lost.

New information has now been made public about the theft of 21 laptops taken from the council’s Norfolk House offices on the night of October 26, 2011, by someone with apparent access to the building.

  1. So, Woolfenden thought “We felt it was in the interests of all the named individuals that they should not be informed.”

More like ‘Woolfenden felt that it it was in the interests of him and his other overpaid chums that the public should not be informed’

  2. Did the Commissioners know? If ‘Yes’, why did they not disclose, and if ‘No’, then why did they not know? Either way, to an outsider, it looks like the Commissioners are not fit for purpose and just gatekeeping. It looks like an inside job. Why did the ICO not prosecute first time around and will the ICO prosecute this time – or is the ICO another gatekeeper as well? There is a stink of corruption and cover-up – on a massive scale, about this whole debacle, which is much bigger and wider that RMBC.

  3. Well observed yup, too many old and ‘new’ freeloaders milking the system, but hey, when you’re cruising along at seven hundred quid a day, who needs to be bothered by problems of an ethical nature?

    • They are ‘here’ now and being paid to do a serious job. Are they supposed to do it for free? So, what should they do about this misdemeanour years ago in your opinion?

      • Er, given that they’re paid as superstars then they should, unlike their lazy overpaid predecessors, earn their superstar remuneration and address the matter, along with all of the other failures that they’re supposed to be addressing!!
And given that they’re creaming the town’s coffers very nicely thank you, is that really just a bit too much to ask??

  4. and still you morons of Rotherham will vote the not fit for purpose ruling labour councillors back into power in may……..you reap what you sow.
“my grand-dad voted labour, my dad and uncles voted labour, they would turn in they’re graves if I voted anyone else” is a mindless saying that should be forgotten in may. I will be voting for anybody but labour. the men above would turn in they’re graves if I voted for them(labour) it could have been they’re grand-daughters, daughters or nieces. OR EVEN YOURS!!!!!!

    • In the positions that they were in ..of course they had inside info…What most people do not understand is that before anything else and I mean ANYTHING ELSE Akhtar, Hussain ,Ali, and Bostan served themselves and their own . You do not need a degree to work that out . They could do and act as they liked within the roles they played … and all the other Cllrs kept their heads down for fear of being called racist.

  5. I don’t buy this “for fear of being called racist” it was for their own self interest it was for money, don’t forget cabinet members were on £28,000 a year plus. It wasn’t about fear of racism it was fear of losing their luxury life style, this meant more than the lives of the young kids being abused on their watch. The councillor were and still are a set of self serving greedy useless cowards.

  8. All who were councilors at the time of these serious criminal offenses simply MUST stand down at the very least…This will be for the welfare of Rotherham as a whole and even their own and families welfare in the end who will be feeling the strain of each revelation….This whole ‘ once ‘ unbelievable saga is building up to something so terrible that it doesn’t take rocket science to see where it will end. Councilors are now widely known to be complicit is the worst crime in the history of Rotherham.
One wonders how any young (or old) victim of sexual abuse could possibly put any trust in a councilor who celebrates his election with treating his fellow councilors to a night of pornography. He has the sort of face any self respecting woman would like to slap……….

    • Good point Linda. Jeremy Corbyn has the labour NEC meeting and the annual labour party conference coming up – – can anyone invite Jeremy to make a stand and that he demand the resignation of the councillors, – – or face immediate expulsion ? The same applies this side of the M1, Jeremy has inherited a poison chalice in a vipers’ nest !

  9. We will never get the truth about the true depth of the scandal as long as lies are being told by the so called open and transparent labour councillors. For someone to walk in to an office and STEAL evidence is appalling it shows the lengths this council will go to cover things up. There sre still councillors who knew about what was happening but turned a blind eye and are still in denial

  10. I am a respecter of civil law. ie, I try to keep within the speed limit, pay all taxes due, tell the truth and honour my neighbor and so on. However there are times when I do believe peaceful civil disobedience is required.
It is due to the publics respect of law and order that the council are permitted to hold their meetings. They can only function because the public observe their rules. Perhaps the time has come for the public of Rotherham to refuse to let the councilors run the show they call RMBC meetings. They can’t send you all to jail as they did with one member of the public who called them to account.
If the councilors were required to volunteer their time in order to make some attempt to pay back the Rotherham tax payer I suspect the council chambers would resemble an empty mausoleum….

    • Shame you are not in the UK to lead this. Sadly the majority of the public have ignored what is going on. No demonstrations (unless you count the UAF’s counter demonstrations), no petitions, hardly anyone attending Cabinet (as was) or Full Council meetings unless they have an immediate/close/personal CSE link.

At the first few meetings after the Jay report were published there were far more Police and Council staff in / around the Town Hall than attendees – they put barriers up to control queues etc but only 10-20people attended – the public gallery wasn’t even full so there was no need for the overflow video linked rooms to be used

  11. this latest episode in the Child Sexual Exploitation saga in Rotherham is disgusting, I cannot understand why no councillors have been called to account they have failed in the public duty in particular their duty of care to the public namely children in their care, I was out for a meal last night with a council employee who told me ‘it is embarrasing when making a visit to say you are from Rotherham Borough Council ‘ this whole debarcle needs sorting out, what are these Commisioners doing ? and how will they deal with this latest revelation? if a police officer fails in their duties they can be discilplined and dismissed for bringing their public office into disrepute, why is this not happening in Rotherham????????????

    • Why has there been no publicity showing that the police seriously investigated the thefts and brought the culprits to account? Is SYP so entangled with the cover-ups by labour that they are paralysed? What was the point of labour putting forward a replacement for one of their own failed police commissioners – was it so as to install another gatekeeper?

  12. The simple answer to Anonymous’s report and question, is that the upper echelons at Rotherham, including the new ‘uns, are all protecting their big fat salaries and sod the victims of their incompetence

  13. If a Police officer fails in their duty etc, Of all the “goings on” at RMBC not one Employee has been brought to task, not one past or present Councillor has been put before the Standards Committee. Why?, Mrs Collins the now Ex Monitoring Officer, should be subjected to an investigation with a view to “misconduct in public office”. We have Cllrs who were on the Cabinet, who were forced to resign due to “not being fit for purpose”. Yet no one was put before the Standards Committee for “bringing the Council into disrepute”. Why not. We even now have one of those “not fit for purpose” Cllrs, Cllr Beck, in charge of the Standards Committee. How o How can the Commissioner`s explain that one.

    • I was referring to the organisation Common Purpose, and, yes, their members pursue their own mutual interests, even when contrary to the interests of those they are paid to serve, and despite insider dealing to obtain their positions and contracts – why not use google to explore the links between Woolfenden and Peter Hay?
