DATA: Force corrects child sexual exploitation data following FOI error
In January this year, the BBC submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the force, requesting data around child sexual exploitation offences since 2013.
It has become clear that, due to a clerical error, incorrect figures were released.
In our original response to the BBC’s request, we replied that 695 offences have been ‘flagged’ with the child sexual exploitation marker since the force introduced the marker in January 2013, to the end of 2015.
Actually, our most up-to-date-figures (from January 2013 to the end of January 2016) show there were 681 offences.

The force at the centre of the Rotherham abuse scandal has been branded “incompetent” after it released incorrect figures on its own work.
South Yorkshire Police said a “clerical error” meant it gave the BBC the wrong data on charges brought for child sexual exploitation (CSE) offences.
It pushed out a correction on the day Lib Dem Lord Scriven raised the issue in the House of Lords.
The force said it acted “as soon as the error came to light”.

Given the importance and sensitivity, one would have thought that South Yorkshire Police would have double- and quadruple-checked any statistics they issued on this topic to ensure they were absolutely correct.
This is more than an own goal. They have not only made themselves look foolish, they’ve also made the BBC and Lord Scriven look stupid as they based their articles and statements on totally incorrect statistics.
Whichever senior police officer is responsible for this managerial failure – is it the Chief Constable? – needs to up their performance sharp.

For once I find myself in agreement with Janet Green (see, it does happen from time to time 🙂 ), SYP are still dropping boll*cks, left right and centre.
But the Star aren’t helping matters much either, unless the Police have also just given them new incorrect information;

I thought that was rather a lot in just twelve months. Thing is, according to SYP’s website, it was 177 between January 2013 and January 2016. So much for “accurate figures”, then, obviously someone has cocked up. That figure over three years sounds more realistic, an average of 59 a year if my poor maths is correct?
So the question is, did the Star get it wrong or did SYP give out duff information a second time on the same subject?
Incidentally it’s worth remembering; 177 people charged is not the same as 177 people tried and convicted, so how many have had the charges against them dropped?
And lets make no mistake about this; Most of those 177 WON’T belong to the grooming gangs. There is still much work to do in that particular area.
