Labour retain control of Rotherham Borough Council

VOTERS kept Labour in power at Rotherham Borough Council after an all-out election called after the party’s previous regime was severely criticised and control was taken over by Westminster.

Candidates sporting red rosettes won 48 of the 63 seats up for grabs in the town hall council chamber.

UKIP remains the borough’s main opposition with 14 councillors, while Clive Jepson regained his seat in the Anston and Woodsetts ward and the Tories were wiped out, with Mayor-elect Chris Middleton losing out.

Election 2016: Labour holds Rotherham and Sheffield councils

Labour has retained control of both Rotherham and Sheffield Councils.

The party took 48 of the 63 seats up for grabs in Rotherham in the first election since the authority was put under government control in 2015.

Meanwhile, in Sheffield, Labour has so far secured 56 of the 84 seats to give it an unassailable majority, with the Lib Dems taking 20 seats.

In Barnsley Labour took 19 of the 21 seats with the Barnsley Independent Group claiming the remaining two.

In Rotherham, UKIP gained two seats to take their total to 14, though group leader Caven Vines lost his seat in Rawmarsh.

  1. Latest Vines, consigned by the electorate to the history books.

Feeling sorry Gavin Felton, don’t let it hurt you, your heart in the right place.

People still voted for Barry, what is the world coming to.

Congratulations to the rest of you, look on the bright side, you got in one way or another.

  2. Just what will it take? People are obviously not doing any research whatsoever on past records. I’m absolutely appalled. I reckon if Shaun Wright had been put up as the candidate for labour he would have got back in. Blind voting, I vote labour cos my dad did.

      • Hi Rothpol, I’m not sure if you’re kindly telling me to keep my beak out of Rotherham affairs or being serious. Either way I come on your site as a lot of the issues in Rotherham are mirrored in Barnsley – we share the same voter apathy, the same PCC and corrupt police force and almost identical faux socialist labour councillor goons voted in year after year (no changes in Barnsley with the latest council vote either.)

I would love to dedicate time to highlighting the same issues in my home time but unfortunately time is something I have a great deal of to do it justice besides which my writing is terrible it would be too easy to pick holes in should I come across an argument.

I will stop commenting but keep watching – keep holding people to account. Keep an eye on sir Steve he’s one of the slipperiest labour fish however is tactically very quiet.

  3. Oh dear, that’ll be the Middleton that voted enthusiastically in favour of a f***ing huge Aldi sign at Bramley, in spite of dozens of residents objecting to the monstrosity.

And clearly the good people of Sitwell Ward also thought that he didn’t represent them either.

Goodbye and good riddance to him – very well deserved indeed.

As the cockneys used to say “Who would Adam and Eve it ? ” ( they have been “replaced” of course , sorry , I meant to say that “the East End has been culturally enriched” )

Poor naive me for thinking that the idea of democracy is that if politicians have done wrong , they are to be elected out of office .
Perhaps the idea of democracy has been lost, in this Lost Borough.

  5. Labour voters have no right to complain about cover ups , corruption and denials by RMBC ever aagin. It hasn’t stopped and nor will it due to to the ignorant fools who’ve kept them in power. Your parents and grandparents may have voted Labour, but it was a different Labour to this disgrace to humanity. Do you honestly think they give a toss about the people in this town (excluding criminals and child abusers)? You’ll work it out one day unless you’re too stupid to. Well done. You should be proud.

  6. Well, there you have it….A chance for Rotherham’s concerned citizens to call to account the old guard condemned by Prof Jay and they threw it away….
The ‘old guard’ by the way, have the towns apathy in their favour and this gives them the gall to stand again without shame or embarrassment….
I often wondered why the public gallery in the Town Hall council meetings was more or less empty in the light of all that is happening in Rotherham Borough…Well it’s not rocket science is it… If it doens’t affect me I don’t care a rats a..e psychology….
A grandmothers advice to young people in that awful place called Rotherham is ” get up every day and go to school. Learn all you can and set yourself a high goal. Persevere and overcome the apathy of previous generations….Research other places on the planet you would like to live and at the first opportunity …. get out.! Emigrate…
Hope there are a few decent people who can help restore human dignity to used and abused young people to set high goals and reach them. For the rest I say ; in the immortal words of Johnny Cash… You can run on for a long time, run on for a long time, run on for a long time but sooner or later……….Other than that, I’m lost for words!

Could you expect better results in the RMBC?

      • The worst result would be just 3 or 4 “opposition” Councillors. That would be like no opposition at all. With 10 they can cause a bit of a nuisance especially as the ruling party are mostly lobotomised.

I wait for the full break down of the results. I suspect Labour are down across the board. Remember Sheffield once fell to an opposition unfortunately they were a worthless crew. I do not believe there is such a thing as a safe seat . With turnouts at about 30% with 3 or 4 parties contesting a seat it is possible to win with only about 10 percent of the total electorate. The old Liberal Party (not the Lib Dems) understood this 40 years ago. Currently the Greens and UKIP are beginning to grasp it as well.

So I am not totally pessimistic hence my quote from Classical China. However I do recognise that there is a long journey ahead.

Finally if Jayne Senior does not resign the whip within two years I will be disappointed in her and chuck her book in the bin.

When is our next Borough Councillor election.

(I have an interest in the politics of Long Ditton in Surrey – it’s within Elmbridge – and on the Elmbridge website I read:
“For each Ward, 3 Councillors are elected. The Candidate with the most votes will serve a term of 4 years, the Candidate with the second highest number of votes will serve a term of 3 years and the Candidate with the third highest number of votes will serve a term of 2 years.”)

Local elections across the country are a patchwork quilt. Some go every 4 years all at once. Some districts go by thirds over a four year cycle with the county council (if there is one) in the fourth year. Then you get two member ward in these that have a blank year or have parish councils in that year. Fortunately there is not too much that is rational about it. After all it is supposed to be LOCAL with local preferences about election cycles.

  10. What a surprise. Labour again. As my dad used to say “paint a donkey red and it’ll get in”. However, the only literature I received through my door was from labour and Ukip. The only party that came to my house was labour and the only party outside the polling station in sunnyside was Ukip. Who got the majority of the vote in my ward, labour and Ukip. Why did nobody else make the effort. I guess publicity costs money and sadly the independent candidates were distinctly lacking.
What a sad state of affairs, a party that shamed it’s townsfolk and a party that shames everybody that’s not “indigenous”. Give me strength.

  12. Worth noting that there will be a Parliamentary boundary review before the next election. With the intention being to reduce the number of seats from 650 to 600 and equalise the number of electors per constituency. This will involve a reduction of one or possibly two seats in South Yorkshire and residents will be able to make submissions to the Boundary Commission. Perhaps Rotherham will be shown to have more Parliamentary representation than can be justified.

I almost chocked on my morning coffee reading the election results for Wath with councilor Alan Atkins winning by a mile….There must be 1639 voters in Wath who are ( to say the least) morally deficient…..Serious deviants under his watch held sway in Wath…. Perhaps Mr Atkins interest in pornography fudged his thinking somewhat in what is morally reprehensible and his ability to descern sex deviants living under his nose…
He is not even a closet porn addict. He celebrated his success with a porn night in his own home with friends. Women included….. ( I’d love to know if they were fellow councilors) Somebody might know and tell…..
I don’t usually comment on a persons looks but a short view of Mr Atkins chairing a council meeting 31st March 2016 makes amusing viewing…. A life size budda who doesn’t give the impression he’s the sharpest tack in the box…..To be re-elected with his pedigree left me with the feeling ‘ what the ….’

Insidently my home town was Rotherham and I have an interest injustice for victims whether in NZ, Rotherham or Timbuktoo.

  15. I feel sorry for you. Though I’m not even British, I updated the results for the 2015 election Wikipedia page. I noticed, back then, how well Labour recovered from 2014. To think they could lose this year was naive. People aren’t led by reason; if ever, they’re given the wrong premises.
So here’s our world: Elections are useless. The media lie day in day out. Know the truth, you know there is a code of silence… is it the Soviet Union of the Races? The great utopia that isn’t? The same pattern happens in the whole Western block that won WWII against Hitlerism. As if capitalism combined with antifascism had begot regimes directed against their own people, who are suspected of thinking for themselves.
It will take years for people to understand that, and more so to end the tyranny.
Many thanks to this blog’s administration.

  16. Noticed some odd voting Patterns. One would expect that if a person votes labour for one candidate, then you would expect them to vote for the other two candidates as well. This does not seem to have happened.( same applies to UKIP candidates as well) A good example of this is Sue Ellis, 400 labour voters voted for her, then did not vote for Hoddinot/Read. ( notice her popularity compared againt the other two)
Darren Hughes lost, this is becoming a habit, first as a Tory, he lost the seat for Labour (1) then he lost the seat in Anston for Labour (2) and now he has lost the seat for Labour in Thurcroft (3) this must be a record.
It will be interesting to see who UKIP appoint as “Town Hall” Leader, its got to be someone with a bit of Umph, who can get them working in a cohesive group. Regardless of Political Party, Rotherham needs an effective opposition. UKIP are clearly snapping at the heels of Labour.

  20. Weren’t there any of the current UKIP councillors on the council in 2005? What about serving police officers in 2005? Didn’t the now UKIP councillors vote against more funds going into supporting abuse victims?
Labour has a long record of letting down it’s largely working class support, but why would, particularly around here, would traditional Labour voters swap for the only party that is “keeping the flames of Thatcherism alive”? UKIP representitives on Question Time on the issue of the rich avoiding/ evading paying tax, said the rich should pay less in tax, and alsol complained of raising the minimum wage and a free NHS “sucking in immigrants”. (The logic being if we want to keep migrants out wages should be lower here and no free NHS )
Some traditional Labour voters have gone over to UKIP, but look at the collapse of the Tory, Lib Dem vote (locally) and the demise of the BNP
Like with Hillsborough and Orgreave we do need a full proper inquiry into who knew what, who did and didn’t do what, over the abuse, but child sex abuse scandals and allegations are floating around all major political parties and the establishment, including royalty eg around Jimmy Saville, Elm house, Kincorra boys home, Cyril Smith, Grenville Janner, Peter Entwhistlle (Bury UKIP) care home abuse in Nottingham etc, Those connected to Fred and Rose West etc etc
Non of the above involved/ accused Pakistani Muslims as far as I am aware.

    • “Why would traditional Labour voters swap for the only party that is “keeping the flames of Thatcherism alive”? Because it’s the only party willing to do something about immigration and the only way we can do that is to take back full, control of our borders..
If you think the demise of the BNP means that the issues that brought it and the EDL into being have disappeared, you’re seriously deluded.. Mass immigration which has been imposed on the British people is now a very important issue for a large sector of the electorate. And whether you like it or not since the Coalition and the Tories alone, reduced tax for the rich, more, not less tax has been collected.

If you want to defeat a sitting Councillor in a safe seat remember it is politics of the long run. You will need to leaflet every month, canvas and find with accuracy that 15% who will vote for anyone to get rid of the incumbent.
Where you identify tribal support never deliver there or make any waves, let then sleep.
Then on election day keep banging on supporters their doors till they vote.
With 6000 front doors as little as 3-5 dedicated people can win in within a few years.

This is how a pointless party like the DimDems do it. They are getting people not to vote for them but to vote against the other parties.

Annonymous asked the question. #1, “what discipline did Gerald Smith receive and
#2 was the matter referred to the police and
#3 Why did he manage to keep his position in cabinet….Nobody responded to that request posted by Annonymous 2 Sept 2014….
Perhaps therein is simple the answer to why RMBC councilors turned a blind eye to CSE because of the rot within their their own undisciplined, character deficient ranks….They wouldn’t deal with it internally … Had they tried it would have stirred up s..t within their own house… Prof Jay was quite correct in her assessment ….Individually and collectively they were unfit for purpose……

Anyways ( I think you are a female) thanks for the encouragement and the correction I take your point with some humility I hope…
I have made the point to those children involved in this crime against humanity that they have an option to work hard and be determined to use the opportunity to gird up their loins and leave for a better life at the first opportunity…I hope they get the message somehow….It may take generations for Rotherham to change for the better. No changes on the horizon that I can see for this generation of abused children….New Zealand is definitely a good option… A beautiful country the size of Britain with 4 million people….. 27. For Linda Wheeler, – since she asked for help
Comment structures – both on blogs and in on-line Newspapers often don’t exhibit the hierarchical structure that we have here (in other words they don’t have a “reply” button).

Those that do have hierarchical comments almost always limit the depth of the hierarchy. This is because in most systems every level of the hierarchy has less column width – and without limits you could easily end up with a lowest level allowing just one letter (of the alphabet) per row of text.
(there are other ways of handling it – but none are totally satisfactory when there are a lot of comments, and particularly when, as here most contributers are relatively unsophisticated web-wise.).

    Of more relevance:
Rothpol uses a Blog structure, for something that would conventionally be set up via a Forum structure.
    For example this:
    https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/
    or this:
    http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=647
    or this:
    http://travelsy.proboards.com/
this is not intended to be a criticism of rothpol.
But forums do make it easier to keep of with an issue than a blog structure does.

    • Thanks for that, I understand more now. I use the structure that I do, as a compromise between the needs of readers and commenters. I just increased the number of levels of comments, see how it works from experience, Rik.

      • Hi,
It was not intended in any way as a criticism. I applaud what you did when you started it all up.Looking back to the earliest entries – it was a pretty lonely patch of land that you were standing on.

But a forum does allow a greater continuity of discussion of an issue.

It is worth seeing how Ben Goldacre handles it – ‘cos of past legal issues, and that he has deservedly made a lot of money out of his books

        http://www.badscience.net/ – his blog
        – has no visible link to:
http://badscience.net/forum/ – an active forum that he set up of which I’m a long time member.

        • I didn’t take your comment as criticism, I just wanted to explain why things are the way they are, at least for now.

    • Gee Reg…. Thanks for that but oh dear it will take me days to work it out but I will try….I am not being sarcastic when I really do bow to your knowledge on this stuff…You may find me making the same old mistakes in the future but I will keep trying and hopefully get it right…Thanks again.

  28. All this clap trap! Truth is that 67% are getting on with their lives and / or have long since given up on local politics with its amateurish shenanigans. Many simply can’t read and certainly are not aware of what Rotherham’s Muslims are up to.
