Last Tuesday the community had a meeting to voice their collective concerns about this utterly stupid proposal and fortunately Kevin Barron also attended. There were well over 200 people in the village hall and many had to leave because they just couldn’t get in.
Kevin generally chaired the meeting and I was very pleased that he did so. He told the meeting what he knew, which to be honest was little more than we did – it had been sprung upon everyone, MPs included,and certainly RMBC had been kept in the dark. Crucially though, KB said how he and other MPs had voted in favour of HS2, but he’d certainly not voted for this version. So, Sir David Smuginns and his HS2 cronies had conned parliament and made fools of MPs.
At the meeting, it was decided that there would be a mass walk-down to the forthcoming HS2 ‘Information Event’, which was booked in the village for 22nd July and the community would register its displeasure!!
On Friday morning, I met with the HS2 people in my capacity as Clerk and left them to setting up their stuff. But I did notice how they had brought two ‘security’ guys with them from, I think, Churchill Securities – NB both were wearing identity lanyards.
So, the evening came around and at least 300 people descended upon the village hall and it all got very interesting. They were chanting “Say no to HS2” and when they tried to get into the hall, the security guys, who were no longer wearing their IDs, tried to stop them entering. The guy on the main entrance into the hall was pushed aside and he just couldn’t cope, and by all accounts he assaulted a member of the public whose shirt was torn off and he finished up with a gouge on his back.
During the fracas the parish Chair, Malc Brown, informed the HS2 people that this was a public meeting, in a public hall and everyone had the right to enter and if they didn’t like it then they should leave. At which point all the HS2 people scarpered into the next room, leaving the place full of demonstrators chanting to their hearts’ content.
The police attended the event and had to block the dual carriageway to allow the demonstrators to cross and then they attended the assault situation.
So, all in all, the good people of Bramley registered their disagreement with HS2.

This is a vanity project pushed by the EU and our compliant Ministers under the T.E.N.T. programme. It should be scrapped. We have many uses for the billions it would save. Well done all who took the time to turn out.

Just where are Healey and Championing hiding again? Not a peep from either of them. Nothing new there. Healey’s moving…….why should he worry?

Bramley is in Kevin Barrons constiuency, hence he was there and they weren’t. It’s not rocket science.

Healey lives less than half a mile from the Bramley boundary and a smidge further to the Parish Hall. The HS2 amended routes is uprooting his constituency of Wentworth and Dearne ie Bolton on Dearne , Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe. Still not a peep.
Tata Steel is in Champion’s constituency but he makes media statements outside TATA.

I have found no evidence to support the view that HS2 is a TEN-T scheme forced on us by the EU. It was DfT who chose to specify the scheme in the way they did, with a ridiculously high speed, and who chose to follow EU standards making it incompatible with our network and vastly more expensive than better and cheaper options. The blame then lies with our political system which has allowed the scheme to progress with no effective scrutiny by MPs. Post Brexit the scheme must be reviewed and surely scrapped.

I could not find anything in that link that says HS2 is a TEN-T scheme. The West Coast Main Line project was shown as a TEN-T scheme but it is shown as completed here.

The British rail project known as HS2 is situated on a rail section part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).
The UK Department for Transport applied for EU funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) in response to the 2014 CEF call for proposals with a project entitled ‘Improving the UK Core High Speed Rail Network: HS2 Phase 1 Ground Investigations.’
This proposal, registered with the number 2014-UK-TM-0324-S, has been approved for funding. The total approved EU contribution is of EUR 39 198 517.00, out of a total of EUR 78 397 034.00 eligible costs.

HS2 deal in the main with the Sheffield City Region, basically the old South Yorkshire CC without having to go to the trouble of elections. The top politician is ‘Sir”Steve Houghton, and it would be instructive for people to have a look at how the Meadowhall route affected his Cudworth ward, and compare that to to how the new plans impact on it. Three councillors from each authority, in addition to the Leader, represent (or don’t) your interests. HS2 told us that information about the revised route was communicated to senior officers six weeks before July 7th. Your commissioners and Chief Exec. would have known. One of them, Julie Kenny, is also on the Sheffield City Region LDP.
