Calls have been made for South Yorkshire Police’s chief constable to be fired after it emerged he was not facing dismissal for misconduct.
David Crompton was suspended after the Hillsborough Inquests due to “eroding trust and confidence” in the force.
Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Dr Alan Billings said Mr Crompton would be required to either retire or resign.
But Liberal Democrat peer Lord Scriven said he should be sacked and accused the PCC of lacking “backbone”.

Mr Scriven is a dreadful man. i met him at a business even a few years ago, where he was bigging up his business credentials, saying that he owned an overseas travel company.
When I investigated it later, I discovered that it was tinpot and that it’s only claim to fame was being fined for submitting its accounts late!
Not a man you want to do business with.

Apologies for the typing and grammatical errors. I was interrupted just as I went to check my draft, and hit the ‘Post Comment’ button too early.

No need to aplogise Janet, nobody’s perfect.
With regard to “Lord” Scriven, I’ve never met him personally so I’ll have to take your word for it that he’s a dreadful man. Finacial irregularities seem to be pretty commonplace amongst the great and good in Parliament don’t they? I guess he must have fit right in. But his assesment of Alan Billings and the situation regarding the former Chief Constable is difficult to argue against.

So are we still paying the outgoing Chief Constable and the new one at the same time? If so it further demonstrates that Rev. Billings has little regard for taxpayers’ money. One wonders what the new Home Secretary will decide to do with SYP when she announces her decision in September.

1 x man = 1 x call for him to go.
I do agree with Mr Scriven.
Crompton should move his stuff out and let the new guy start afresh.

May was outraged when “Slimy” Shaun wouldn’t stand down as PCC – now is her chance to get rid of the lot of them !

Although my instinct is to say that Mr Crompton should go as quickly as possible and that, if he doesn’t resign or retire, proceedings for dismissal should be commenced, I am conscious that I – and I rather suspect everyone else posting here….and Mr Scriven for that matter – have only a partial view of events.
Having sacked people (in my business life), I know only too well how important it is to have all the evidence and to follow the correct procedures.
So (whilst waiting for a call from Australia) I’ve just been looking up what the procedures actually are for dealing with a Chief Constable. Having read bits of parliamentary debate and the Home Affairs Committee report on the issue
Home Affairs Committee: Police and Crime Commissioners: power to remove Chief Constables, July 2013
Click to access 487.pdf
I then found the whole bureaucratic procedure set out in detail on the SYPCC website at
http://www.southyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/Transparency/Section-38-of-the-Police-Reform-and-Social-Responsibility-Act-2011.aspx
No wonder it’s taking so long. I think it’s hard to blame the Commissioner for taking so long if all these hurdles have to be jumped.
I wonder what the views of the Chief Inspector of Constabulary are? Have they been received yet? And, given the Inspectorate’s failure to identify lots of the issues of concern revealed in the recent report of the Acting Chief Constable, what confidence should we have in those views? Do they become public and when?

Scriven spent his time as Leader of Sheffield Council as an extra long election campaign.
I never had much respect for Scriven but after he filmed this, whilst Leader, what little respect I did have soon went away – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV5z9d2W6gs
