Labour reshuffle: Abbott to shadow home secretary and Sarah Champion has been made shadow women and equalities minister

Diane Abbott has been promoted to shadow home secretary in Jeremy Corbyn’s reshuffle of his shadow cabinet.

Shami Chakrabarti is shadow Attorney General while Jo Stevens is the new shadow Welsh secretary.

Dame Rosie Winterton was replaced by Nick Brown as Labour chief whip, a job he held in the last Labour government.

Mr Corbyn has promised to unite his party following his re-election as leader last month.

‘Talented women’

Some posts have been vacant since a wave of shadow cabinet resignations in the aftermath of June’s EU referendum with some MPs taking on multiple portfolios.

Announcing changes to his top team, the Labour leader said in a statement: “I am delighted to confirm the appointments of four extremely talented women to our shadow cabinet.

“These appointments mean, for the first time ever, two out of the three traditional ‘great offices of state’ will be shadowed by women.”

Lady Chakrabarti, who was made a life peer by Jeremy Corbyn following her report, is to be the new shadow attorney general, the Labour leader announced.

Mr Corbyn also handed a major promotion to his long-time ally Diane Abbott, making her shadow home secretary as he began reshuffling his top team in the wake of his leadership victory.

    LOL.
Just wondering what “just call me Jezza ” will do for a follow-up to prove without doubt that he’s a certifiable nut job.
Lots of women and ethnics – good one comrade.
But Comrade Jezza – where’s the Gay and the Tranny ? Now come on man , get it right. I mean , left.

  4. @official accountability.
The office of Leader of HM Opposition carries duties and responsibilities. Duties to oppose and challenge the Government on policies and responsibilities to present a government in waiting and represent their voters.
Corbyn has failed on both counts. There were no daily comments from him during the Tory party conference. A proactive leader of the opposition should have been watching and listening closely to what Tory MP’s did and said and presenting alternatives in time for the evening news bulletins.
He threw away his remaining credibility by waiting until the PM made her speech and then, and only then did he publish soundbites.
Diane Abbott is damaged goods. Fired by Miliband and caught out sending her son to a private school. She has risen through the Labour party via jobs a Social worker, councillor and MP and not forgetting her role as JC’s former bedmate.
Chakrabarti published a whitewash report into anti-semitism in the Labour party. No credible observer or reporter gives her any credence for it and lo and behold! She is made a peer by Corbyn and is now Shadow AG.
I keep trying to explain to you and your fellow supporters that local or county support for Corbyn is not enough, you need the support and votes of millions of ordinary people across Britain before you start celebrating.
The Labour party hasn’t got the support nor will it get the votes.
    Dream on.

  5. Chakrabati of Liberty (formerly Campaign to civil liberty). She is said to have founded Liberty! Is she a femaleDorian Grey?
I had help CampaignforCivil Liberty in 1965.
Is she old or a fraud?
I approached Liberty over abuse by Labour over10 years ago and was given the brush off. They said go to citizens advice.
    Then there’s cruncher Champion.
This is a whole chocolate tea set!

  6. I can see nothing but a Tory Government for the next two decades at the least ! The very thought of Blair returning is alarming, ridiculous and repugnant. Ditto the thought of Diane Abbott as Home Sec !

  7. Corbyn’s complete lack of credibility and suitability for the post of PM is contained in his statement;
“two out of the three traditional ‘great offices of state’ will be shadowed by women”.
Shadow posts are not ‘great offices of state’ they are appointments made by the Leader of HM loyal (?) opposition.
Theresa May and Amber Rudd hold great offices of state not hypocrite Abbott ,’whitewash’ Chakrabarti or turncoat Champion.
