Orgreave campaigners ‘misled’ over inquiry into miners’ strike clash

Campaigners for an official inquiry into the Battle of Orgreave claim they were misled by Home Secretary Amber Rudd into believing there would be a probe.

In a move described as an ‘establishment stitch-up’, Ms Rudd rejected calls for a statutory inquiry or independent review into a violent confrontation between police officers and picketing miners at the Orgreave coking plant in 1984.

Ms Rudd said she made the ‘difficult decision’, supported by Prime Minister Theresa May, because ‘ultimately there were no deaths or wrongful convictions’ resulting from the conduct of South Yorkshire Police.

Amber Rudd never committed to set up Orgreave inquiry, says Home Office

The Home Office has rejected suggestions that Home Secretary Amber Rudd made any commitment to campaigners to establish an inquiry into the 1984 clash between police and miners at Orgreave.

Ms Rudd announced on Monday that there would be no statutory inquiry or independent review into the confrontation at the Rotherham coking plant, which saw violent scenes involving thousands of police and striking miners.

The decision came as a shock to many who had campaigned for a full public inquiry as they said they had been given the impression that some kind of review would be established.

‘Disgusting!’ Furious Andy Burnham accuses Amber Rudd of a ‘stitch-up’ over Orgreave

On Radio 4’s The World at One, Andy Burnham warned Amber Rudd that nothing less than a full inquiry into Orgreave would do. He feared, however, that she would opt merely for a judge-led review of evidence. That, he said, would simply not be good enough.

In the event, the Home Secretary did not opt for a full inquiry or a judge-led review. She opted for no inquiry or review at all.

Campaigners consider seeking Orgreave judicial review

Campaigners have said they will consider seeking a judicial review into a decision not to hold a public inquiry into the so-called Battle of Orgreave.

Amber Rudd told MPs on Monday a review into clashes between police and pickets during the miners’ strike in 1984 was not in the public interest.

The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign told a press conference earlier “the gloves are off”.

‘Gloves off’ as Orgreave campaigners vow to continue fight

Campaigners for an inquiry into the so-called Battle of Orgreave have vowed to continue their fight following Home Secretary Amber Rudd’s rejection of their plea, saying “we regard the gloves as off”.

There were angry reactions to Ms Rudd’s decision to not hold any form of inquiry into the 1984 disturbances, at a press conference in Barnsley where miners, union officials and lawyers said they were considering pressing for judicial review.

Barbara Jackson, from the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign vowed to continue her fight, telling supporters at the National Union of Mineworkers’ HQ: “We regard the gloves as off now on our side.”

One Response to Orgreave campaigners ‘misled’ over inquiry into miners’ strike clash

  1. Xinsider says:

There is little doubt that the decision given yesterday by Rudd is a political cover up to protect senior members of the Government of the day. In her statement she says “there is more oversight of policing now than 30 years ago” Has she never heard of, or read the Jay Report ? South Yorkshire Police turned a blind eye to the mass rape of more than 1400 young girls for well over a decade. Several current and retired officers are being investigated regarding this scandal and, according to victims, the rapes are continuing unabated ! Ms Rudd now has the same level of credibility as SYP ! Unfortunately that also applies to Theresa May.
