Civic leaders on HS2: ‘£65bn vanity project at expense of the North’

Anger is mounting over the latest bombshell in a £65bn high speed rail “vanity project” which civic bosses and campaigners say will benefit the capital at the expense of our district.

Wakefield Council leader Peter Box has said the economic benefits of the HS2 plan have been exaggerated following an announcement by the government’s Transport Secretary revealing his broad support to amended rail maps.

HS2 already on the buffers after town hall blocks diggers

It has been billed as Europe’s most ambitious engineering project: a 335-mile high-speed rail line that will scythe through the heart of England, bringing 250mph trains to our biggest cities.

However, work on part of the £56 billion HS2 scheme has already hit the buffers after staff made a basic error.

Contractors for HS2 Ltd have been forced to pack up heavy drilling equipment and rigs after trying to work on part of the route without the proper permission from the local council.

‘Speak up’ call over as minister reveal Doncaster HS2 route is preferred option

Residents are being urged to stand up and make the Government listen after ministers backed a planned HS2 route through Doncaster.

Ministers confirmed yesterday they want to take forward HS2 Ltd’s proposal to take the track through the the Dearne Valley, with direct train services to the existing Sheffield Midland city centre station.

But it added there would be more consultation on the scheme, while involves demolishing homes in Mexborough, including the new Shimmer estate, before they make a final decision.
