Arrests at English Defence League protest in Rotherham

SIX people were arrested at the 17th far-right protest to be held in Rotherham town centre since 2012 on Saturday.

South Yorkshire Police said around 120 members of the English Defence League took part in a march and around 140 people took part in a Rotherham Unite Against Fascism counter-demonstration in Minster Gardens.

District Commander for Rotherham Chief Supt Rob Odell said six people were arrested on suspicion of a range of offences including being drunk and disorderly, public order, homophobic chanting, two on suspicion of inciting racial hatred and breach of a dispersal order.

Four people have been charged with offences following demonstrations in the town centre at the weekend.

Offences range from public order, drunk and disorderly and racially aggravated offences. In addition, two other people were arrested and bailed.

Four charged after EDL demonstration in Rotherham

TWO women and two men have been charged with a rangee of offences following Saturday’s far-right protest in the town centre and others are being investigated.

Gaynor McBeth (36), of Norfolk Court, Rotherham, was charged with breaching a section 35 notice.

Margaret Ridgeway (38), of Hollowgate, Rotherham, was charged with an offence under section 5 of the Public Order Act.

Who does the counting or estimating at these events I was in the minster gardens and you would have been hard pushed to count 50 people so I don’t know where they got 140 from

  It is incredibly difficult to estimate crowd sizes – as we have recently seen with Trump’s inauguration.
  The police were probably in a better position than you in assessing the size of the groups.
  Robin Symons also came up with some numbers, and I read somewhere of restrictions on the size of the EDL group.
  (they are here somewhere, but the organisation of this site means it is near impossible to follow even a one-afternoon event throughout.)

    Andy Kershaw from Radio Sheffield said there were 150 on the EDL march and 300 on the Unity Rally. I think he over-estimated both. I would say 200 at the Unity Rally at its peak. 120 looked about right for the EDL.

I wonder why some complain about how much it costs to police the edl march but then the same people go on the counter march , do the police attend the counter demo for free?
