Mohammed Abbas Idris Awan, of Dun Street, Kelham Island who is understood to be a fourth year dental student Clifford Dental Hospital in Sheffield, was arrested on Thursday, June 1 following a raid in Sheffield and at another at a property in Huddersfield.
24-year-old Awan appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court in London this morning charged with one offence of engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 and two offences of possessing a record of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000..
Sheffield dentistry student accused of planning terror
A student has appeared in court charged with preparing terrorist acts and possessing terrorist documents.
Mohammed Abbas Awan, 24, who studies dentistry at Sheffield University, was arrested earlier this month.
Mr Awan, from Huddersfield, is accused of conducting research into steel ball bearings, slingshots and cold steel knives as part of what the prosecution alleges was early attack planning.
He was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 30 June.
