Council applies for injunctions to stop trio holding up road-side tree removal

A legal bid is aiming to stop protesters from holding up a controversial tree felling programme in Sheffield.

The city has seen regular street protests and a series of arrests as contractors have removed hundreds of road-side trees.

Now Sheffield City Council has applied for injunctions against three named individuals – including one of its own councillors – and “persons unknown” to stop them “continuing to take unlawful direct action (or to aid, counsel, encourage, direct or facilitate others to take direct action) whose intended and actual effect is to prevent the lawful felling of trees in highways belonging to Sheffield City Council”. A three-day long hearing began at the High Court in Leeds on Wednesday.
