Police secretly paid £10,000 to a child rapist who attended sex parties where men drugged and sexually abused young girls.

Officers knew of the Asian man’s conviction for raping a child when they recruited him in 2014 to spy on a gang suspected of sex-grooming crimes against teenagers in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Child protection experts condemned the move as “staggeringly irresponsible”. The NSPCC said it was “appalled to learn that police planted a child rapist in the midst of vulnerable girls”.

The Northumbria force’s covert deployment of the sex offender, who can only be identified as XY, emerged during trials where 17 men, mainly of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin, were found guilty of offences against children and young women.

Operation Shelter: Police paid £10,000 to child rapist

A police force paid a child rapist more than £10,000 for help during an investigation, it has emerged.

The conviction of a Tyneside grooming gang is the culmination of Operation Shelter – itself part of Operation Sanctuary, a long-running Northumbria Police investigation into the abuse of vulnerable girls and young women.

It has now emerged that during the course of the inquiry the force paid the convicted rapist – known as XY as he cannot be named for legal reasons – to act as an informant.

Police chief defends use of child rapist as spy in sex abuse inquiry

A chief constable has defended his decision to pay a convicted child rapist almost £10,000 to spy on parties where it was suspected under-age girls were fed drugs and sexually abused.

The NSPCC was “appalled” Northumbria Police chief Steve Ashman authorised the paedophile’s deployment, which can only be reported now that 18 people have been convicted or admitted offences prosecuted in a series of trials related to child sexual exploitation (CSE) in Newcastle.
