FIVE men charged over the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath are due to appear in court for the first time today.

Former South Yorkshire Police officers Sir Norman Bettison, Donald Denton and Alan Foster are due at Warrington Magistrates’ Court along with solicitor Peter Metcalf, who acted for the police following the disaster, and former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell.

FIVE men charged following an investigation into the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath are due to appear in court for the first time.

Former West Yorkshire and Merseyside chief constable Sir Norman Bettison is expected to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court along with fellow retired police officers Donald Denton and Alan Foster, former Sheffield Wednesday secretary Graham Mackrell and solicitor Peter Metcalf, who acted for South Yorkshire Police following the disaster.

Match commander David Duckenfield faces 95 counts of gross negligence manslaughter but will not be formally charged until an application to lift a stay imposed after a prosecution in 2000 has been approved by a High Court judge.

Hillsborough disaster accused appear in court

Five men charged over the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath have appeared in court.

The men, including ex-South Yorkshire Police (SYP) chief inspector Sir Norman Bettison, attended Warrington Magistrates’ Court in Cheshire.

No formal pleas were given for four of the men but former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell pleaded not guilty to health and safety charges.

They were all bailed until next month.

Ex-police chief Bettison among five facing court over Hillsborough

Former chief constable Sir Norman Bettison and four other men have arrived at court where they are due to appear charged with offences related to the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath.

Bettison, 61, who was a chief inspector with South Yorkshire Police at the time of the tragedy, will appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court along with fellow retired police officers Donald Denton and Alan Foster, former Sheffield Wednesday secretary Graham Mackrell and solicitor Peter Metcalf.

The defendants walked past family members of the 96 victims of the disaster who had gathered at the entrance of the court.
