Left ‘failing to confront truth of sex crimes’

Sacked Labour frontbencher Sarah Champion accuses her party

The “floppy left” is failing vulnerable children because it will not confront the race factor in sex crimes involving street-grooming, according to a Labour frontbencher sacked for speaking out on the issue.

Sarah Champion attributed her party’s squeamishness to a liberal fear of being falsely branded racist.

The MP for Rotherham was dismissed from the shadow cabinet by Jeremy Corbyn last month after she wrote in an article for The Sun that Britain “has a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls”.

In 2014 The Times reported on how 1,400 girls from Rotherham were abused by groups of men who were said to be “almost all” of Pakistani heritage
In 2014 The Times reported on how 1,400 girls from Rotherham were abused by groups of men who were said to be “almost all” of Pakistani heritage

A few days later Mr Corbyn accused the newspaper of inciting Islamophobia and stigmatising “entire communities”. Ms Champion’s departure from the Labour front bench led to claims that the party was stifling free speech.

In her first interview since being dismissed Ms Champion highlighted differences in attitudes towards race in London and in Labour’s northern heartlands.

“If I’m on the floppy left, to be accused of racism is probably the worst thing you can call me. That fear will motivate me to step away from a lot of topics I’d maybe tackle head on if I didn’t have that phobia,” she told The Times.

Ms Champion said that many Labour members and politicians based in London had “never been challenged by a reality that’s different” from their largely “tolerant, multicultural world”.

“London is not representative of the UK and it’s definitely not representative of the north of England in relation to race,” she said. “Rotherham and many post-industrial towns are still segregated.”

Ms Champion’s constituency is among a lengthening list of English towns, including Rochdale, Oxford and, most recently, Newcastle upon Tyne, in which groups of men largely of Pakistani origin have been convicted of multiple sex crimes against vulnerable white girls.

No similar prosecution has occurred in London. Ms Champion said that the “multicultural policies that I, through my working career, grew up with, and which Jeremy Corbyn grew up with, need a translation to come outside London”.

She said: “It’s not that Yorkshire’s racist, it’s that Yorkshire is very blunt and doesn’t sugar-coat anything. In Rotherham, people’s frustration is that if they all knew what was going on, why didn’t the people who were meant to protect them do anything about it?”

Ms Champion was strongly criticised by many Labour supporters last month when she called for research to understand why most of the convicted perpetrators of gang-linked sexual exploitation were of Pakistani heritage.

She said she found it extraordinary that some on the liberal left seemed less offended by her words than by her decision to write an article for a newspaper such as The Sun.

“Once you make a decision to be open and up front about what’s going on in this country, you want to get the broadest number of people to hear that message,” she said. “Rotherham has a working-class demographic and a lot of my older constituents read The Sun.

“I’m a Labour politician, I want us to be in government and I wanted to let people know we’re taking this seriously. I wanted to reach out to people that we don’t normally reach out to.”

Ms Champion drew a parallel between the reluctance of some people in her party to acknowledge the race factor in such crimes with the terror of being accused of racism that played a role in the longstanding failure of police forces and local authorities to prosecute offenders.

“By not dealing with the facts head on, you allow people to manipulate what’s going on.”

She emphasised that most child sexual abuse took place within the family and that the vast majority of convicted child-sex offenders in Britain were white men, usually acting alone.

“But for me, with this type of street-grooming crime, it’s no different to where we were in the recent past, with everyone knowing what was happening in the Catholic church but not doing anything about it.

“If, 15 years ago, we’d acknowledged there was a particular issue among a criminal subsection of men in the Pakistani community we could have addressed it, carried out the research and gained the understanding to challenge it, tackle it and eradicate it.”

•Sarah Champion has set up a website, dare2care.org.uk, which gives advice on how to identify and prevent all types of child abuse.

  1. Think its time the people of Rotherham got together and called for a ” VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE” in its council leaders, time after time there proving they carnt provide it residents with the services and job they were voted in to do. Everyone that agrees and subscribes to this add your comments,

  2. It disturbs me this is still being looked at as a problem of the Left when in reality, sex offenders, child groomers and rapists don’t care about political leanings.

Do you think the Cllrs and their rat bag co-accused would have been Labour had Rotherham been a Lib Dem or a Conservative stronghold? The answer is: Of course not.

Its a child protection issue and when the truth does come out, as it surely will, then people who a) have no idea b) have their own agenda, can be silenced as experts in nothing but hot air.

These issues relate to and impact on the lives of people who have been seriously effected by this…turning it in to a political football day, after day, after day, after day is simply not acceptable.

Quite frankly, either talk to someone who can tell you fact or offer opinion about something else.

  3. Will Sarah carry her convictions to their logical conclusion? If cse is the most serious problem that has ever faced Rotherham (yes) and if the Labour Party are not willing to do all in their power to understand it, deal with it and support particular communities in dealing with it (evidently not) then Sarah, as the elected MP for Rotherham must resign the Labour whip and seek re-election as an Independent MP. I for one, would support her because I think she has sincerely tried to tackle cse. Jeremy Corbyn is so only half right on this issue: yes, it is true that sexual exploitation is common to all communities BUT, in this particular series of events, it has been overwhelmingly an issue for one particular community. That is indisputable fact. The sad irony is, that in trying not to play into the hands of racists and extremists, the inaction and fear of the Labour party and RMBC has done exactly that. The willingness of a particular community in Rotherham to face this (helped by all people of good will) will do more to heal divisions in this town than anything else. I am ready to stand with them and support them if they can find the courage to do so. The fact that cse IS common in all communities, paradoxically, is the reason we can all help a particular community face it. But we must not break the link between ALL and PARTICULAR! False logic! “All communities facing cse” does not mean “no-one is facing cse” – that is the blind, false, doctrinaire logic of leftist lunacy. All communities facing it means we have to ask how and when particular communities are facing it. And Sarah has done nothing more than point that out…

    • ” all us vote wi’ Labour round ere”
It’s a sad fact that in certain parts of the country, multi-party democracy as it is intended to be practiced is dead.
It beggars belief to anyone with a sound mind that given all the corruption, apathy and political imorality that took place in Rotherham, the electorate voted yet again for those of the same ilk.
Even a so-called whistleblower became a Labour Party councillor.
As they say in the South “you can’t Adam an Eve it”.

  4. Well said Sarah now back up your words by resigning and then you can stand as an independent candidate in the by-election that would follow. I’d vote for you

  5. People who have bought the paper version of the newspaper The Times of London, or people who are just reading this newspaper for free somewhere at the planet earth are reading at page 2 the very obvious part that most people in the here and now in the history of mandkind understand right away:

“Once you make a decision to be open and up front about what’s going on in this country, you want to get the broadest number of people to hear that message,” she said. “Rotherham has a working-class demographic and a lot of my older constituents read The Sun.
“I’m a Labour politician, I want us to be in government and I wanted to let people know we’re taking this seriously. I wanted to reach out to people that we don’t normally reach out to.”

At the other hand is there for the about 7 billion simple descendants of the first human beings not being a monkey outside the soevereign country United Kingdom the difficulty that most people will until the end of times not have the knowledge to understand what the people in this soevereign country in the here and now in the history of mankind are meaning with “racism”.

This of course since all the “ism” have been by serious historians with serious knowledge of history referred to the dustbin of the history of human kind.

So one is in the history of mankind in historic sense naming a “ism”,

for instance “racism” within the for simple descendants of the first human being not being a monkey one and only human “race” of human beings,

    (neo)liberalism, (neo)capitalism, (neo)socialism, (neo)communism, (neo)nationalism, (neo)internationalism, (neo)patriotism, (neo)fascism, (neo)fanatism,

and it happened in historic sense decennia ago that the “ism” had been decennia ago by serious historians with serious knowledge of history referred to the dustbin of the history of human kind.

Also nobody outside the soevereign country United Kingdom will ever have the knowledge about the serious question of what the people in the soevereign country United Kingdom in the here and now of the hisory of mankind are meaning “cse”, since there are 83 different definitions for this abbreviation.
