Ukip loses EU funding after missing deadline

Ukip has lost access to a source of European Union campaign funding, amid scandals of misuse and misappropriation of money.

The Ukip-dominated political foundation Alliance for Direct Democracy in Europe (ADDE) went insolvent in the spring and has now missed a deadline to register for EU funding, losing up to €1.5 million next year, the Financial Times has reported.

Ukip and its allies are still secure in their main source of funding, the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group of Eurosceptic and far-right MEPs in the European parliament, which netted €5.7 million last year.

European political organisations, such as ADDE, made up of coalitions of national parties and parliamentarians, can have access to €30 million in EU grants every year for campaign costs for European elections.
