Monday morning developments – Six Labour MPs and one party official named on sleaze list

Growing number of MPs under scrutiny over conduct claims

A growing number of MPs are being investigated over allegations about their past conduct towards women.

Ex-ministers Daniel Poulter and Stephen Crabb are the latest Tory MPs to be referred to internal party inquiries.

One cabinet minister, Sir Michael Fallon, has already resigned while others have denied claims against them and remain in office.

Labour has suspended two MPs and is separately investigating an ex-official’s allegation of rape.

The parties have begun a series of investigations under newly constituted procedures into alleged inappropriate behaviour in response to a series of press reports in the last week.

Other cases have been referred to the Cabinet Office and, in one case so far, to the police.

Her concerns about the culture were passed to the leader of the house but no-one can confirm what happened next.

Commons leader Andrea Leadsom has said she was not told about the rape claim.

Amanda – whose name has been changed to protect the identity of both parties – says she was raped by someone who worked for a Conservative MP.

Six Labour MPs and one party official named on sleaze list

Emily Thornberry has said that she feels “ashamed of what’s been going on” in the Labour Party after sleaze allegations were made against several MPs.

The shadow foreign secretary called for a “step change” in the treatment of women and said that her party was setting up an independent body to give advice and support to anyone who had been sexually harassed.

“I want to make sure . . . that this sort of behaviour does not happen in my party. I am ashamed of what’s been going on,” she told Sky News.

Cat Smith, Labour MP for Lancaster & Fleetwood, said that the party’s rules to deal with sexual misconduct “were not fit for purpose”.

Time to get a grip on sleaze scandal, ministers warn May

Theresa May has been told to get a grip of the sleaze scandal at Westminster as concerns were raised over potential cover-ups by the government whips’ office.

The prime minister must “take a lead” on the crisis and ensure that it is handled properly rather than “behind the scenes”, Anna Soubry said yesterday. The former Tory minister suggested that there have been “unacceptable” cover-ups in the past and urged Mrs May to instruct the whips’ office to come clean about information they have received about MPs.

“The senior level of the whips’ office have known all manner of allegations and the time has now come where we have to draw a halt to this. All the stuff that they know must be given to the prime minister and her aides and we must do things properly,” she said. Allegations of a criminal nature “must go straight to the police”. Her remarks came after Julian Smith, 46, the new chief whip, referred an allegation about the Tory MP Charlie Elphicke, 46, to the police on Friday night. Mr Elphicke has denied any wrongdoing.
