New role for Rotherham council leader Chris Read

ROTHERHAM council leader Chris Read has been appointed as the head of a major regional forum.

Cllr Read (pictured) was announced as the new chairman of the SCR Combined Authority (CA) at a meeting on Monday, when it was revealed 52 bids for a total of £207 million have been put forward for funding from the Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund (SCRIF).

He said: “This is an exciting time for Sheffield City Region and it is a privilege to take up the position of chairman of the Combined Authority.

“I am also pleased to see so many bids have been submitted in response to the open call.

  1. Actual context:
“Sheffield City Region inundated with funding bids for capital projects costing over £630m
A range of capital projects costing more than £630m have been put forward in response to a call for funding bids by Sheffield City Region (SCR).
This announcement follows on from the city region inviting organisations to bid for funds to enable the development of new transport and infrastructure projects.
A total of 52 bids were received in response to the “open call”, and these will now be assessed for their suitability in receiving funds from the Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund (SCRIF).
The news came at a meeting of the SCR Combined Authority (CA) on Monday 11th December at which Councillor Chris Read, leader of Rotherham Council, was appointed the new chairman of the CA.
Cllr Read said: “This is an exciting time for Sheffield City Region and it is a privilege to take up the position of chairman of the Combined Authority.
“I am also pleased to see so many bids have been submitted in response to the open call. The ‘let’s get it done’ work-ethic in Sheffield City Region harnesses drive and ambition.
“At SCR, we deliver. We keep our promises and get things done in an honest, no-nonsense way. This is helping us to build a truly competitive centre of business excellence. I look forward to seeing the best of these schemes coming through to fruition.”
Cllr Read replaces Sir Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council, as chairman of the CA.
The response to the open call for funding was described as “exceptional” by officers from the SCR executive at yesterday’s meeting. The schemes are together asking for a total of £207m from SCRIF, to enable schemes costing £630m to go ahead.
The SCRIF fund is made up of national Local Growth Fund resources, part of the Government’s continued investment in the Northern Powerhouse.

  2. And how much will he be getting paid for this ? He’s now run Rotherham in to the ground and he’s now ready to move on to bigger and better things. Let him go and take his hearts and minds loser of a partner with him cos she’s about as useful as a chocolate fireguard

  3. Another ‘trough’ to get his nose into! Why does Rotherham Council have to be part of the Sheffield City Region when Barnsley & Doncaster Councils aren’t? I’d much prefer a one Yorkshire deal which can include us all, preferably with its Leader being Peter Box, current Leader of Wakefield City Council. Both Barnsley & Doncaster support a one Yorkshire deal, why does Rotherham Council feel that our future will be best served as part of a Sheffield City Region? Maybe they fear losing out to a Yorkshire-wide Council as the money would have to be shared out on a more equitable basis and greedy Sheffield & Rotherham Councils won’t be able to ‘siphon off’ the lion’s share for themselves, their hangers on and ‘pet projects’.

At least Wakefield Council Leader Peter Box is strongly advocating a one Yorkshire deal and has far more experience of running a large City Council than both Chris Read and Julie Dore put together – Chris Read should tell Julie Dore to “get knotted”!!

  4. SCR is dead in the water – why is Reed not backing One Yorkshire ?? Rotherham & Sheffield does not mean anything, nor did they carry out a real “consultation process” with their respective voters ! It is a complete sham !!

  5. ‘why is Reed not backing One Yorkshire ?? ‘
Because Read would not be the Leader of One Yorkshire.

The struggle between One Yorkshire and SCR could be interesting.

  6. And down at Private Eye thee editor was heard to say as he did a final proof read of Rotten Boroughs column: “Ah, Rotherham, you are the gift that keeps on giving”.
Isn’t it great when someone makes your job so much easier!
    Shame about the downside.

  7. Arise Sir Christopher Reed OBE, made a knight of the realm for services to politics and make way for Lady Hoddinott, now that has a nice ring to it
Stranger things have happened and with the right level of behind the scenes lobbying a tap on the shoulder is relatively easy to get hold of.
As for his SCR role well it was Buggins turn anyway, if it was on merit alone this lightweight would not even get into the car park.
Yorkshire One, the sooner the better and we can say goodbye to Dore and Reed.
