Action has been taken against an alleged Islamist terror plot in the UK that could have happened at Christmas, counter terrorism sources say.

Four men were arrested early on Tuesday in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

An Army bomb disposal team cordoned off a street in Chesterfield where a 31-year-old man was arrested. Nearby homes were evacuated.

Three other men aged 22, 36 and 41 were arrested in the Burngreave and Meersbrook areas of Sheffield.

All four suspects were detained on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

They have been taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning. The cordon in Chesterfield was later lifted.

Police reveal locations of four terror raids in Sheffield

The locations of all four terror raids carried out in Sheffield this morning have now been released by the police.

Specialist officers forced entry to two homes in Burngreave, one in Meersbrook and another in Stocksbridge in a series of dawn raids. A fifth was carried out in Chesterfield.

Three men, aged 22, 36 and 41, were arrested in Sheffield and a 31-year-old man was arrested in Chesterfield as part of a pre-planned counter terrorism operation.

All four men were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. They have been taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning.

A spokesman for the North East Counter Terrorism Policing Unit said the raids were ‘intelligence led’ and ‘pre-planned’.

Bomb disposal teams dispatched in series of terror raids

Bomb disposal teams and armed officers were dispatched in a series of raids after four men were arrested on suspicion of plotting an Islamist attack.

The men, aged between 22 and 41, were arrested at their homes in Sheffield and Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Sources confirmed that the arrests were related to alleged plans for an attack, which would make it the tenth thwarted terrorist plot this year. The men are being questioned at a police station in West Yorkshire and four residential properties are being searched. Police also sealed off a community centre in Sheffield and a nearby barbers was also raided.

Armed officers attended the raids but no shots were fired. Three men aged 22, 36 and 41, were detained at different addresses in Sheffield, while the 31-year-old man was arrested in Chesterfield.

Dawn raid in Sheffield was terror-related

A dawn raid in Sheffield this morning after neighbours heard an explosion was terror related, it has emerged.

Officers searched a house in Shirebrook Road, Meersbrook, after residents heard what they claim was an explosion at around 5.30am.

Officers were seen searching the property before more teams arrived and placed the property under police guard.

It has now been revealed by South Yorkshire Police that the incident was related to a counter terrorism operation carried out in Sheffield in which three men were arrested this morning.

Terror raids: Four arrests as army bomb disposal called in

An army bomb disposal team is at a house in Chesterfield after police arrested four men in terror raids across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

A cordon has been set up and nearby homes are being evacuated at the site in central Chesterfield, police said.

A 31-year-old man who lives at the address has been arrested on suspicion of terror offences.

Three other men aged 22, 36 and 41 were arrested in the Burngreave, Meersbrook and Stocksbridge areas of Sheffield.
