Children’s services ‘transformed’ in wake of child sex abuse scandal

Social services for children and families in Rotherham have been “transformed” in just under three years according to Government inspectors as efforts continue to turn around “two decades of failure” in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal.

Rotherham Council has been given an overall ‘good’ rating by Ofsted – an increase of two judgement levels – in the first re-inspection since being rated as ‘inadequate’.

This includes an ‘outstanding’ sub-rating for the experience and progress of its care leavers.

The department was judged to be failing in most areas by Ofsted in the wake of the Jay Report, which laid bare how at least 1,400 children were raped, trafficked and sexually exploited in the town between 1997 and 2013 by gangs of men of largely Pakistani heritage.

Rotherham Borough Council children’s services ‘transformed’, say Ofsted

GOVERNMENT inspectors have ruled Rotherham Borough Council’s children’s services have been “transformed” after its previous inspection found “widespread and serious failures”.

Oftsed has rated the services “good” overall following an inspection last November.

The service had been judged to be failing following the publication of the Jay Report in 2014, which found up to 1,400 children were sexually abused between 1997 and 2013.

The report, published today, said services to children in need of help and protection were now good and there was an “effective multi-agency response to children in need of help and protection”.

MP Sarah Champion delighted by Rotherham Council’s kids’ services turnaround

MP SARAH Champion said she was “extremely pleased” with the turnaround in Rotherham’s children’s services revealed by inspectors from Ofsted.

The Rotherham MP (pictured), who has campaigned against child sexual exploitation, described the “good” rating announced today as “validation of a service that has worked incredibly hard to turn itself around in the last few years”.

Council bosses’ delight at children’s services improvement

CHILDREN’S services in Rotherham have been transformed — rising from inadequate to good in less than three years.

The department was judged to be failing by Ofsted in the wake of the 2014 Jay report into child sexual exploitation.

Inspectors returned in November for a four-week re-inspection and have praised the “significant improvement.”

Rotherham children’s services rated good for first time since sex abuse scandal

Rotherham Council’s children’s services have “transformed” since the local authority was rocked by a child sexual exploitation scandal, according to Ofsted.

An inspection in 2014 identified “widespread and serious failures” of children in need of help by the council, while another inquiry found at least 1,400 children had been subject to sexual exploitation in the town.

A November re-inspection of the council’s services for children in need of help and protection, children who are being looked after, and care leavers, found the “quality and impact of services for children are transformed”.

Rotherham Council has been given an overall “good” rating following an Ofsted inspection in November.

The service had been judged to be failing following 2014’s Jay Report, which found up to 1,400 children were sexually abused between 1997 and 2013.

Ofsted said the authority had made “significant improvement”.

  1. I seem to remember Ofsted giving Rotherham Children’s services a good report not long before the Jay report
Taking into account the amount of money and resources thrown at it I would expect nothing short of outstanding from Ofsted

  2. I have attempted to raise concerns about corrupt practice in Rotherham for
some time. I can only suggest OFSTED
have had a lapse in credibility.

  3. I thought the choice of words by Thomas on BBC Look North relating to the same staff being still there at RMBC was very interesting, if it was ever under any doubt, Thomas certainly hammered the point home about staff not being allowed to do their job.

Now I do wonder who would not let staff do their jobs when protecting children?

With all the money and time RMBC have had the service should be outstanding in all areas, no ifs, no buts.

The level of complacency on accepting a good rating was breathtaking, the press release from RMBC, the local MP all sitting back believing it is job over.

Until all the criminals are behind bars, the victims receive guaranteed lifetime support and those very odd individuals who used Rotherham Bradford Politics blog to spout their bile are brought to task, then it is not over.

  4. The actual problem hasn’t been addressed at all.
    This is just box ticking.
The Talking head was splurting and more interested about the ‘rating his organisation has acheived, but then again they never talk about the past do they it’s been buried.
He never mentioned, commented or acknowledged the problem of the Islamic rape culture of men praying on young children which is still going on.

  5. Thomas will be on the next bus out (if he’s got any sense) before the Ofsted ‘Good’ grade starts to wobble.

Thomas is a frog hopping careerist so he will move on whilst claiming he has ‘transformed’ Rotherham’s Children’s Services to get another leg up and keep wearing his Superman outfit and his underpants on the outside..

Well a transformed service would command an ‘Outstanding’ grade and he’s no where near to that (despite £60m into his coffers) and Children’s Services should be walking on water.

The cliches coming out of his mouth on last night’s Look North are the usual tonsil amateur dramatics. Thomas’s cliche of ‘it has got to be good enough for my child’ is well worn but tells you absolutely nothing. A distraction technique.

Getting rid of Rotherham Children’s Services’ problems by shutting down childrens’ homes and ‘dumping’ children especially outside of the borough’s boundary dilutes any seen problem . It will have given him a wide grin but not for those where the ‘problem’ has ended up.
