Taxi scandal: public safety ‘at risk’ as thousands of cab drivers exploit law

From The Times’s Andrew Norfolk, Chief Investigative Reporter, for whom we have a great deal of regard here. Rik

“Councils have been accused of putting public safety at risk by handing out thousands of licences to taxi drivers from across the country while in some cases failing to monitor criminal records.

One local authority licensed almost 4,000 drivers despite having only 13 taxi ranks. It then seemingly lost track of their criminal records and failed to admit its errors.”

  1. The safe solution here is to ask when booking the taxi is the taxi a Rotherham licensed taxi?

If it is Rossendale put the phone down.

Do not let your family use a taxi or driver registered in Rossendale, RMBC have come a long way in making taxis safer, well done RMBC on this one!

Rossendale registered taxis should be taken off the approved list of RMBC firms for tenders

Ask yourself why a taxi company or driver would want to go for the soft option, then ask yourself would you like a member of your family alone with that taxi companies driver?

  2. It shuldn’t just be left to individuals to boycott taxis not registered in Roherham. The Council should be, and maybe they are, taking legal advice on how to sanction taxi firms using out of town registered drivers.
A longer term solution is for government to act, demanding a shared code of practice for all licensing authorities and using their information to create a national database.
