South Yorkshire police commissioner hopes Sajid Javid will agree new costs deal over historic scandals

South Yorkshire’s police commissioner will try to a broker a new deal with Home Secretary Sajid Javid to save the force from the crippling financial impact of dealing with its ‘legacy’ issues dating from mistakes made in previous eras.

Seven figure bills are still arriving with the county’s police force each year as a result of the Hillsborough disaster, now almost 30 years ago, the child sexual exploitation scandal in Rotherham and the resulting Operation Stovewood.

  1. Before parting with another penny of taxpayers’ money perhaps Javid could ask the PCC and Chief Constable to prove that they are honest, trustworthy and competent. When shown to be incapable of doing so, and unfit for purpose, institutionally corrupt and incapable of self-governing, Javid’s only option will be to sack them and put in place a Whitehall lead team.

    • Well said! The problems which South Yorkshire Police face are not legacy problems at all, they continue to be the most corrupt, the most incompetent and the most abusive police force. They are in every sense feral! Their abusive, corrupt actions have prevented thousands of people from getting justice, and because of their refusal to deal with the issues that they now have to face, funds which should be paying for honest, competent, present day policing, are having to be used to to clear the backlog of police initiated crime.
That can only mean that thousands more will be denied justice as this feral force continues to seek to cover up more and more, in their efforts to escape their ongoing responsibilities. How can it get anything but worse in such a situation? The entire force should be disbanded and replaced, and the budgets for dealing with the old and the new should be separated to preserve the ability for competent policing and access to justice, going forward.

  2. So, if I’ve got this right, SY Police did a crap job for decades with top officers paid scandalously high salaries and all at our expense, and now Canon Cobblers wants more of our money to bail them out. Really?

  3. While big question marks continue to hover over the integrity of both police forces and politicians in Britain, increasing contributions to the resources of either will be treated with scorn by the tax paying public.

Since the turn of the millenium, their salaries have increased incrementally as public satisfaction with both has hit an all time low. Perhaps it is time to introduce payment based on satisfaction and results.
