Councils fail to discipline bad landlords

Generation rent is left at the mercy of rogue landlords because councils are failing to use new powers to protect against revenge evictions, an investigation has found.

Freedom of Information requests to 100 councils reveal how local authorities are unwilling or unable to act against landlords who provide dangerously substandard accommodation.

Councils uncovered 13,000 potentially life-threatening hazards last year but issued improvement notices in fewer than one in five cases. This was a drop of almost a quarter on the previous year despite a change in the law that means issuing an order now protects from eviction those tenants who complain.
