South Yorkshire Police’s top cops during Jay Report period being probed by police watchdog

TOP cops who policed Rotherham over the 16-year period in which the Jay Report said 1,400 children were sexually exploited are being investigated by the police watchdog.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) will look into whether chief superintendents, chief constables, assistant chief constables and deputy chief constables who worked for South Yorkshire Police (SYP) between 1997-2013 failed in their statutory duty to protect children.

It is the first time ever that a police force’s entire senior command team has come under investigation by the police watchdog — which investigates the most serious allegations against forces.

  1. Four years from Jay. Just one cop charged for a minor offence. We’re still waiting to see what happens to the (senior) officers who threatened to hand Adele Gladman to the rape gangs.
Whilst I can’t speak for survivors, having sent names of complicit officers to the NCA only to have them suspend contact I for one have zero confidence that any of the scores of guilty officers will ever be brought to justice.

  2. What about the ongoing abuses of children in Sheffield? Why not extend the investigation from 2013 to the present day, as the current command force is doing exactly what previous command forces have done? As well as failing to protect the children, what about the continuing dereliction of duty and persistent covering up of current abuses of children, as to deal with these would prompt the question ‘Why now?’ and ‘Why were these instances not dealt with at the time they were reported?’ Despite the claims of the chief constables and the police commissioners, nothing has really changed, nor is there any likelihood that, under current governance, that anything ever will change. Then, for all of this, are we being asked to believe that for the last 20 years, and relevant today, that not one politician had even the slightest suspicion that something was amiss? As for RMBC,it is still withholding vital information, contrary to the expressed wishes of survivors. The current and justified perception of the rebadged Independent Office for Police Conduct is that of a puppet, colluding, supine toothless gatekeeper. Survivors and current victims do not want yet another report to give them ‘confidence’ – a cathartic placebo for a temporary warm and fuzzy feeling – but genuine closure, which can never happen whilst ever political pragmatism, reputation management and damage limitation has primacy over the welfare of children.

  3. Can we have an investigation into elected members at RMBC regarding their lack of action when children were being abused?

Does anyone have a copy of the list of those who attended the 2005 council CSE seminar?

The starting point for any investigation should be asking all those who attended, what did they do to stop children being abused?

Is it correct that some of those who attended the 2005 CSE seminar have been appointed to head committees by Leader Read?

If that is correct then Read is no better than Stone and should step down and allow Beck to sweep the place clean.

  5. All individuals in the positions of authority opted to constructively ignore this situation over a period of decades – do we seriously expect the crew from IOPC will be any different?
