Labour risks ‘eternal shame’ over anti-Semitism, says Tom Watson

Labour’s deputy leader warns his party may “disappear into a vortex of eternal shame” and render itself unfit to lead if it does not tackle anti-Semitism.

Tom Watson told the Observer that Jeremy Corbyn should adopt all the examples in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition.

He also called for internal inquiries into Jewish Labour MPs Margaret Hodge and Ian Austin to be dropped.

On Saturday, Mr Corbyn said Labour was “working to overcome” the issues.

But he did not concede on calls to use all the examples of contemporary anti-Semitism from the IHRA in its code of conduct. Labour’s code adopted the full IHRA definition but misses out four of the 11 examples.

Tom Watson: Labour faces ‘eternal shame’ over antisemitism

Deputy leader demands Jeremy Corbyn acts immediately to halt damaging arguments within the party

Labour’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, says that the party will “disappear into a vortex of eternal shame and embarrassment” and render itself unfit for government, unless it calls an immediate halt to damaging arguments over antisemitism.

Speaking to the Observer, Watson called on Jeremy Corbyn to drop without delay internal inquiries into two Labour MPs – Margaret Hodge and Ian Austin – who both lost family members in the Holocaust and now face possible disciplinary charges after furious outbursts over the party’s stance on antisemitism.

Watson also said Corbyn should immediately adopt the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, along with all its examples – a move the party continues to resist – in order to prevent the row engulfing the party throughout the entire summer period.

Tom Harris resigns from Labour amid antisemitism row

The former Glasgow MP and transport minister has been critical of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership on the issue

A former Labour MP and transport minister has resigned from the party after more than three decades as a member amid the ongoing antisemitism row.

Tom Harris, who represented Glasgow constituencies in the Commons for 14 years until 2015, said his decision was personal and that he did not plan to join another party.

However, Harris, a critic of Labour’s leader, Jeremy Corbyn, said in his resignation letter sent to the party’s HQ last week that it was “just not the place for me any more”.

  1. I’d have thought their actions in Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan would have led to that.

I’d have thought their total fuzzleduck mismanagement of children services would have led to that.

I’d have thought wanting to close down our NHS at Rotherham would have led to that.

I might be wrong, after all, I am an Owls fan…

  2. I was at the protest outside the Town hall about the closing of day centres and if anyone mentioned housing problems or immigrants they would refuse to talk and just shouted
    “You’re a racist!”
A case of when it suits – to get votes…

    • I’m confused.

Rotherham does need more housing but in the right place, no?

Not sure why immigration is being mentioned to be honest.
