A former Scottish Labour leader has criticised Jeremy Corbyn for what he regards as the party’s failure to root out anti-semitism.
In an unusual move, Jim Murphy paid for a full page advert in the Jewish Telegraph to highlight his concerns.
The ex-East Renfrewshire MP’s article appears on page three of the paper under the headline “In sorrow and anger – an apology.”
UK Labour said they would not be commenting on the advert.
Mr Murphy, who led Scottish Labour to a disastrous election result in 2015, said the current Labour leadership had done so much to damage its relationship with British Jewry.
Labour’s anti-Semitism code should be changed, Unison leader says
A trade union leader says Labour must change its code of conduct on anti-Semitism, warning the issue is costing Jeremy Corbyn’s party votes.
Unison general secretary Dave Prentis urged the party to adopt all of the examples set out by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
He said the issue had caused an “unnecessary schism” in Labour.
But he said it was “not too late” – and backed Mr Corbyn to deal with it “once and for all”.
His warning follows similar comments by another major trade union leader, the GMB’s Tim Roache.
Corbyn accused of comparing Israel to Nazis
Jeremy Corbyn has been accused of comparing Israel’s actions in the West Bank to Nazi occupations in Europe after another video emerged from his days as a backbench campaigner.
The question of whether it is antisemitic to compare Israeli government policy to Nazi Germany’s has become an especially controversial part of Labour’s row over whether to accept the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.
Speaking to the Palestinian Return Centre in 2013, Mr Corbyn said: “The West Bank is under occupation of the very sort that is recognisable by many people in Europe who suffered occupation during the Second World War with the endless roadblocks, imprisonment, irrational behaviour by the military and the police.”
Ex-cabinet minister Jim Murphy attacks Corbyn over ‘arrogant’ approach to antisemitism
A former Labour cabinet minister has taken out a full-page advertisement in a Jewish newspaper to lambast Jeremy Corbyn’s “intellectually arrogant, emotionally inept and politically maladroit” approach to the party’s antisemitism crisis.
Jim Murphy, who was Scottish secretary under Gordon Brown and leader of Scottish Labour for seven months in 2014-15, said he had bought the advert in the Jewish Telegraph, a newspaper popular with Jews in Scotland and the north of England, because “I can no longer remain passive while the current Labour leadership does so much damage to Labour’s relationship with British Jewry”.
