Scandal-hit Rotherham Council spent £16m on agency staff

More than £16m was spent on agency social work staff by Rotherham Council in the wake of the 2014 Jay Report into child sexual exploitation in the town.

Figures obtained by the BBC show its annual spend, which was £1.5m in 2014/15, peaked in 2016/17 at £6.5m.

The report said 1,400 girls were abused from 1997 to 2013, with a second saying the council was “not fit for purpose”.

Council leader Chris Read said: “Failing services are expensive and we’ve paid the price for that.”

  1. Finally Cllr Read reply to something, now he’s woken up he should attend to putting right things right in this city, instead by ignoring the situation this council and police have created

  2. If the so called authorities had sorted out this pakistani problem in the first place and not turned a blind eye, then the tax payer would not have to pick up the bill from the absolute useless liebor council spending on social staff, but then again if the problem had been sorted out we would not need all this so called social staff which is a big money sucking monster.

    • Exactly, when Read says, “Failing services are expensive and we’ve paid the price for that.” It’s our money, the people who pay higher rates than Sheffield for their councillors and get a worse service that’s paid for their gross incompetence.
How many other services are on the verge of failing? Just look at the state of the roads!
