Passengers in Sheffield and Rotherham will become the first in the country to use innovative new tram-train vehicles when a trial finally gets underway later this month.

The new vehicles, designed to run on both the city’s tramlines and the rail network between Sheffield and Rotherham, will begin taking passengers from Thursday October 25.

The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Northern Rail and Network Rail have been working together on the £100m+ pilot project which was first announced in 2009. Securing Government funding, the aim of the project is to help determine whether tram-trains can run in other parts of the country.

Years late and way over budget, Rotherham’s tram train is almost read to roll

THE UK’s dramatically over-running first tram-train will officially welcome on board its first passengers within weeks — almost three years late.

Tram Train partners Stagecoach Supertram, Network Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) have announced the first services between Rotherham and Sheffield will begin on October 25.

The £75 million link — which has cost five times as much as first budgeted — will be the first in its kind in country and involve a special tram vehicle, designed to run on both tramlines and the rail network.

  1. What were the main excuses…….. er I meant unforeseen reasons for both the vastly missed target date and the overspend for this project and have they announced that old favourite of “lessons will be learned” yet?

  2. They use to run to the Brecks didn’t they? It’s only a hop skip and a jump to Maltby from there. Compared to the old boneshaker trams with their wooden reversible seats, the trams running in Sheffield are pure luxury, They are a wonderful ride especially if you’ve got a free pass like I have.
