Revealed: Grant Shapps’ threat to sue constituent over Michael Green post Law firm sent letters to Dean Archer demanding he pay ‘compensation in lieu of damages’ over Facebook post, on behalf of Tory chairman when he was MP http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/mar/16/revealed-grant-shapps-threat-to-sue-constituent-over-michael-green-post Spotted … Continue reading
One of the complaints, often levelled by critics of this blog, is that we rarely feature anyone else other than Labour on Rotherham Politics. The simple fact is, we are about holding those in power to account and that would be enough to explain our apparent bias but there is another reason why we have paid the opposition scant attention in the past. They are quite simply, so bad, that even their own members are embarrassed!
This year sees four Tories facing selection/reselection battles of their own:
Anston and Woodsetts Ward: Good candidate required for safe Tory seat? last one walked off and joined Labour, so much for ‘cuddly’ Tories, it would seem?
Boston Castle Ward:
Brinsworth and Catcliffe Ward:
Hellaby Ward: John Turner – Con
Rother Vale Ward:
Rotherham East Ward:
Rotherham West Ward:
Sitwell Ward: Middleton, Christopher Norman Con
Wales Ward: Thomas Anthony Fenoughty – Con
Wickersley Ward: Martyn Lawton Parker – Con Ward set to go back to Lab.
Even worse than Labour! At least Labour members do something for their money, instead of ‘taking the money and running’, as the Tories have done for many a year!
Quite simply, the Rotherham Tories are a disgrace, and are taking the mickey out of their electorates even worse than Labour!
The news has surfaced today of more ‘unfinished business’ on the expenses scandal front. This time, Ex-Tory MEP and Ex-MP, Den Dover, no spring chicken at 72, has been ordered to repay the eye-watering sum of £345,289!
This is bad enough but the original repayment demanded of him was the much more considerable sum of £538,000! This sum has been reduced as a result of his appeal whose judgement has been revealed today.
Where there’s a trough, the greedy politicians will shove their greedy noses in it! Just think about it, it could have been worse, he could have had a parliamentary credit card as well!
Den Dover previously represented the North West of England in Brussels and was the former Tory MP for Chorley.
Tory Peer Lord Hanningfield, 70, is in the news today because of his pre-trial hearing at Southwark Crown Court. He has been charged under his real name of Paul White, with six counts of false accounting relating to claims made between March 2006 and May 2009.
Lord Hanningfield was formerly the Leader of Essex County Council having stood down and he is suspended from the Tory party and the Lords Whip. His trial is set for May.
Not unsurprisingly, another Tory, an MP this time and a Government whip no less, Bill Wiggin is in difficulties over at least one claim, the money finding it’s way to the local Tory party! He has been reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards over claims of around £5,000 paid to his constituency Tory Party. He says it was for one thing on the claim but his local Tory party apparently have a quite different understanding?
I opened my Advertiser this week. On page 3, I was surprised to see Reg Littleboys’ face grinning, rather vacuously, out at me as part of a story entitled ‘We’re all in the same boat’. I read on with amazement and not to say increasing ire!
What a stunt to pull! A cut of 1.1% for all staff including the Chief Executive, Martin Kimber. A cut of 1.1% in councillors allowances, so they can claim to be sharing the pain equally! Even the Tories on Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council were well out of touch with public sentiment on this issue proposing a miserly 5% cut for the next financial year.
The people of Rotherham were expecting a grand gesture this year from their community leaders. A recent canvass of views on this, indicate that significant reductions in the ‘fat cat’ salaries, expenses and allowances were favoured by most and the most popular figure indicated as the minimum acceptable cut being 20%.
It is little wonder then, that most consider their community leaders to be motivated largely by personal greed, certainly not public service!
This stunt, to put it into some perspective, will likely not be enough to save even one whole job, big deal! Do they think we are stupid? They are certainly taking us for a ride! For the Town Hall ‘Fat Cats’, the ‘gravy train’ still runs from the station, it would appear?
As far as I am aware, only one political group in Rotherham is in touch with public mood on greed. They have called for reductions of significant proportions, of the order of 40%! This group are the Rotherham Independents and some of Rotherham’s voters will get the opportunity to vote for one of their candidates in May.
Southwark Crown Court today saw the beginning of the trial of the former labour Member of Parliament for the Scottish seat of Livingston, Jim Devine.
He faces two charges relating to expenses claims made by him:
The first count alleges that, between July 2008 and April 2009, Mr Devine dishonestly claimed £3,240 for cleaning services using false invoices.
The second count alleges that, in March 2009, Mr Devine dishonestly claimed £5,505 for stationery using false invoices.
Devine’s defence? ‘The big boys told me it was OK!’ It didn’t work for Lord Taylor! Will it work for Devine? We shall see within the week!
Comment: What really astounds and dismays me is the sense of entitlement that this shameful parade of Parliamentary greed has exposed. Depressingly familiar is their cry ‘I have done nothing wrong, the rules allowed it’!
When Parliamentarians go as far as to create false invoices, forgeries to you and me, even they must realise they have crossed the line into dishonesty! How many more have engaged in this kind of dishonest subterfuge? Rik

Morning Star, Website:
I can report to readers a breaking news story said to relate to Rotherham’s own greedy piggy of an MP, Denis MacShane.
After an investigation by the Metropolitan Police a file has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for their consideration.
This is the ninth file passed to the CPS. Of the other eight, six have resulted in prosecutions still going through the Courts system and two were not proceeded with.
This will now be considered by the special team, set up last year to consider political expenses cases, by Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer and Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson.
Former Labour MPs David Chaytor, Elliot Morley and Jim Devine have been charged with theft by false accounting. earlier this year. David Chaytor now faces jail after he pleaded guilty to stealing more than £20,000 at the Old Bailey last Friday. He will be sentenced in the new year.
Former Tory Essex County Council leader Lord Hanningfield, also known as Paul White, faces six charges of making dishonest claims for allowances. former Tory peer Lord Taylor, full name John David Beckett Taylor, is to face six charges of false accounting.
Eric Illsley, the sitting former Labour MP for Barnsley Central, now sitting as an Independent (as is MacShane), is currently suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party and is awaiting trial and is accused of dishonestly claiming more than £20,000.
In March, Labour peer Lady Uddin was told she will not face prosecution over expenses for a flat in Kent which was apparently not occupied for long periods.
Lord Clarke of Hampstead is the second person to be told they will face no further action.
The small number of cases still under investigation by police are believed to include former Labour MP Margaret Moran, former Labour MP Harry Cohen and Labour Independent MP Denis MacShane.
