Denis’s Get Out Of Jail Card?

Couldn’t resist this further example of the lobbying on Denis’s behalf that seems to be current at the moment. Wrong in most assumptions and facts, this is essentially garbage! Advertisements

PMQ’s – Or the weekly where is Denis sat today game?

If there is one session of Parliament that is simply unmissable for MPs, Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQ’s) is it.

It provides many subtle signs for the sophisticated observer to interpret. Rothpol always amuses himself by looking out for Denis MacShane and as importantly where he was sat.

Since Denis MacShane was relieved of the Labour Whip in October 2010, when it was announced that a Police investigation into his expenses claims had been launched, Denis has frequently inserted himself on the Labour benches as though he wasn’t suspended! Sitting there as bold as brass despite being cold shouldered!

Labour Whips have had great difficulty over the last 16 Months in controlling their suspended, and therefore for the moment Ex-Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) member, Denis MacShane. He insists on sitting amongst Labour MPs on the opposition benches, confusing the casual observer.

The Speaker normally obliges us, by calling Denis MacShane. This week the Speaker couldn’t call Denis because he wasn’t even there!

One hopes that the investigation by the Metropolitan Police concludes very soon, it has been 16 Months so far.

Even if the Met Police and the special CPS group recommend no prosecution, Denis MacShane is still the subject of a, currently suspended, Parliamentary investigation. The report of the Standards and Privileges Committee, Chairman one Kevin Barron, will be published in due course and thought to be so damaging, that suspension of the whip would then be made permanent.

How did Miliband do? Not much better than a score draw. Monday was just a flash in the pan if today’s exchanges are anything to go by?

MacShane bites the hand that fed him?

Denis MacShane Rotherham’s oleaginous and very greedy Member of Parliament, cast adrift by Labour with the suspension of the whip last October, has announced that his phone was hacked and he would be issuing proceedings against one of his old employers! See ‘Tiser here.

Labour sources confirm that MacShane is most unlikely to remain a Labour MP and at some point a selection battle to replace MacShane, at a by-election perhaps, but certainly for the next General Election. The smart money seems to be being placed on a local rising star in Labours firmament, but a note of caution, Rotherham Constituency has been here before, last time the ‘local boy’ was Peter Thirlwall, remember what happened then?

The Rotherham Constituency Labour Party is in turmoil I hear, with many General Management Committee members in open revolt, no longer even prepared to speak to Denis and the one thing they all agree upon is that Denis must go. They are thoroughly fed up with the antics and plain greed of their MP and their embarrassment at Denis’s disgrace is manifest.

Denis MacShane is a past President of the National Union of Journalists and has form for abusing his influence abominably, no more so than when he threatens fellow Journos with NUJ discipline if they ask awkward questions along the lines regularly rehearsed in the excellent and informative MacShane Files. In short, as well as his many other failings, being a ‘low down bully’ can be added to the list of his calumnies.

The only person who thinks that he can survive this is Denis himself! He is about to discover that he is wrong! No one is above the party and he will be required to fall on his sword once the Met police and the CPS pull their fingers out, whether he likes it or not!

Is his legal battle to come with his former employers, just another attempt to milk the system for all he can get to go towards a comfortable retirement paid for up to now, largely by us, as is the ‘House in London’ from which he receives rental income, that we paid for along with his property just off Moorgate that he ripped us off for ‘office rent’, to the tune of £125,000 in five years! That exceeds the properties worth, even possibly today!

Only Denis would have thought it a good idea to remain in the House of Commons after last years General Elections. The exposure of Eric Illsley, almost as soon as the last vote was counted, did not bode well for Denis and by October he had himself been suspended from the Labour Whip. Unlike Jim Devine, who at least misused real invoices, Denis’s were considerably more amateur than that!

Why did he stay? Hubris and greed I should imagine. He could easily have left with his reputation intact and still made a living from writing. Another benefit for Denis would have been his long term relationship with Joan Smith, which might have survived if Joan had remained in blissful ignorance of Denis’s greed and deceptions. No one would have remained interested for long in the past claims of an ex MP and the scale of his greed would not have become public.

Denis’s brother, Edmund Matyjaszek the poet and School Headmaster must despair of his younger brother’s activities, as he rather forcibly included him as the provider of ‘research and translation services’ that never were!

Finally, I wonder whether they will let him out of prison to fight his civil case against News Group Newspapers? An amusing thought, I must say!

Accidental Anarchist

Advertiser delivers MacShane free week! Or does it?

This story has been updated with new information, click here.

A week after the Rotherham Advertiser published, not one, but two, puff pieces lifted directly from press releases provided to them by MacShane himself, a good example of lazy journalism, if ever you needed one, we were treated, last Friday to our absolute delight, an apparently, MacShane free week!

The Advertiser should be congratulated by all who know that MacShane is in disgrace!** His opinions and views should count for nothing and should not appear, at least uncritically, until this disgrace is lifted. MacShane free weeks should be the order of the day, rather than the exception!

Or is there a ‘stealth contribution’ from MacShane?

Close textual analysis of letters published in the Advertiser under the name, PJ Cawkwell from Conisborough, Doncaster, show a distinct similarity to communications made by Denis MacShane, especially twitter! PJ Cawkwell, we have been told is a friend of Denis, so it is entirely possible that authorship is misrepresented here.*** Also read update here

———————————————————————————————-

Notes: **He has refused to answer the many questions put to him. When he had the opportunity to answer his critics last year, what did Denis do? He ran away! Cowardice, can therefore be added to the lengthy list of MacShane’s shortcomings.

He is currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Police for his claims, read the MacShane files here. He is suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party and currently persona non grata on the Labour benches. The Parliamentary Authorities have a suspended investigation that uncovered the abuse in the first place and called in the police which was unprecedented for an Ex-Minister and Privy Councillor!

*** Denis has form for this, as students of MacShane already know! At least Lord Ahmed gained some credibility refusing to act as pretend author of a diatribe written by Denis before a rather naive and gormless asian muslim backbencher was persuaded by Denis and much embarrassment ensued for them both!

New and completely fresh problems have emerged with his expenses claims, discovered by Peter Thirlwall and now being examined by Police and Parliamentary Authorities after being missed by everyone until now! All thanks to spreadsheets, aren’t they wonderful? We will be reporting on this fresh discovery, soonest!

MacShanes Interests 3 – European Policy Institute

The European Policy Institute has little evidence of activity. References to it are few and far between on the web, so no fancy logos to show you, nor even a website link.

According to accounts “In 1992, he (MacShane) founded the European Policy Institute, and served as it’s Director until 1994, when he was elected MP for Rotherham. The register of members’ interests, shows that he remained an “Associate Director” until 2002. His brother, Edmund Matyjazek, a poet and Headmaster ‘administrates’ it apparently! Nothing like keeping it in the family!

MacShane himself has given two accounts.  When first contacted he said;

“It is no secret that I do more work for Europe than any other MP, and people connected with the institute help me with that.”

Later texting a fuller explanation, which read;

“The EPI was set up 20 years ago by a network of people on the Left working in Europe and the US. It has organised conferences and published books and reports.

‘Ed is my brother, but simply administrates it. The claims refer to work in connection with my well-known Parliamentary activity on European and global politics. When I stopped being Europe Minister, I used the EPI to claim for research and translation relating to my work as an MP on European politics.”

The ‘EPI receipt’ that the parliamentary authorities found as acceptable evidence and paid him twelve times, varying amounts, to the tune of over £8,000, quite incredible!

Even allowing for what may be lurking under the redacted, blanked out, sections, it appears somewhat deficient, in the evidence department, as proof of actual expenditure.

There is no evidence that any organisation with the name EPI has ever traded in any field, so how come they can supply research and translation on any commercial basis?

It should be a simple matter for the truth to be established. Bank accounts and records of the EPI and MacShane himself should clear this up in no time. We deserve the truth and the answer to a simple question, were these transactions real or are they evidence of a  simpler or less sophisticated version of the ‘Devine printers receipt scam’ that got Jim Devine 16 months recently?

Reading the Runes? or would that be runiczny?

Twitter: Denis is an inveterate tweeter, normally averaging more than five tweets daily. Sometimes up to ten! Denis MacShane on twitter.

Astonishingly for Denis, he has suddenly stopped!

No posts at all since 11:11pm on the 18th, when there was one preceded by just a couple on the two previous days. It takes an awful lot to shut this arrogant politician up.

Perhaps he has now significantly altered his opinion of the police’s  intelligence and range of investigative tools at their disposal. Alternatively he may have been the beneficiary of some serious advice, of the ‘when you’re in a hole, at least stop digging’, variety. We shall see?

Stop Press: 23rd October 2010. It would appear that I might have at least one reader? Within hours of  making a point about lack of activity by Denis on Twitter, low and behold a sudden flurry of posts, well two actually.

Political Blonde: Joan Smith’s Website. Who is Joan Smith?  Denis MacShane’s partner!

On the 13th, hope she is not superstitious? republished a Guardian piece she had written, originally published on the Guardian website last year as; I am sick of my country and this hysteria over MPs, published 25th May 2009. Strange that she re-published her original defence of parliamentarians in general, and Denis in particular, the day after the Parliamentary Standards Committee met and made their decision and a day before their decision was made public on the 14th!

This has the potential to make her look rather foolish or naive at best, if the ‘boys in blue’ find differently?

Where the story of Denis’s liberal interpretation of the provisions of the ‘Green Book’ started, back in June, 2009.

Mail on Sunday story 20th June 2009. Former Labour Minister’s £8,000 cash for his poet brother’s ‘translation services’

I quote from the story:

‘On the 19th June 2009, when he was initially contacted by the Mail, Mr MacShane said: ‘It is no secret that I do more work for Europe than any other MP, and people connected with the institute help me with that. That is all I can really help you with.’ The line then went dead.

A couple of hours later, Mr MacShane, who served as Europe Minister between 2002 and 2005, sent a text message saying:

‘The EPI was set up 20 years ago by a network of people on the Left working in Europe and the US. It has organised conferences and published books and reports.

‘Ed is my brother, but simply administrates it. The claims refer to work in connection with my well-known Parliamentary activity on European and global politics. When I stopped being Europe Minister, I used the EPI to claim for research and translation* relating to my work as an MP on European politics.’ * My emphasis.

The Mail, clearly touched a raw nerve with MacShane when they asked about this little arrangement with his brother, Edmund Matyjazek.

When Denis MacShane makes a statement it usually requires careful textual analysis to determine exactly what it means.

This phrase from the text statement is instructive: ‘I used the EPI to claim for research and translation’.

What is he saying here? The use of the term ‘to claim’, not ‘to carry out’ is perhaps, more revelatory than he intended?

Gerald Shamash, of Labour Party solicitors, Steel & Shamash, has reportedly, been engaged by MacShane to help him. I myself have previous experience with this firm of solicitors and found them less than thorough about checking that ‘facts’ were actually true! I will probably tell the full story of this episode at a later date. It would be quite instructive! On their website they claim ‘Steel and Shamash, has established a fine reputation in criminal cases over many years. They claim to specialise in serious cases, such as fraud’. Gerald Shamash, himself, claims among his specialities; (Cases involving) Parliamentary rules relating to the conduct of Members of Parliament. Probably got the right solicitors then.

Edmund, Denis’s older brother, is unlikely to be at all happy that he is being dragged into a situation of considerable potential embarrassment, by his younger brother. Edmund is owner and proprietor of an Isle of Wight, private school as well as being it’s Headmaster. He is also poet and luminary of the Poetry Society. A lot to lose therefore.

I know from personal experience that younger brothers can end up causing a lot of pain, embarrassment and more than a little money, through their own stupid actions. Just when you least expect it!

Rotherham Hangs It's Head in (Mac)Shame! Denis MacShane – Metropolitan Police Investigation! Suspended from Labour Party!

Another snout in the trough?

It has been revealed today, that Rotherham’s Labour MP, Denis MacShane is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police for his less than open and now it would appear, less than honest approach to his parliamentary claims.

The complaint of 7th July 2009 was indeed submitted by a BNP activist, who is being referred to as the ‘Sleaze buster’, one Michael Barnbrook. The responses to his original complaint can now be viewed here on the website of the BNP Reform Group. Despite the source of the complaint, we should all be grateful that this sorry saga is now to be thoroughly investigated. There are further issues, that go to the heart of our democratic procedures, that will be the subject of a later posting.

In the report of the 12th October Meeting, published 14th October, 2010 of the, Committee on Standards and Privileges reads:

‘the Committee agreed that the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards should report to the Metropolitan Police Service the conduct of the Rt hon Member for Rotherham, Mr Denis MacShane’.

This blog, Peter Thirlwall’s Parliamentary Website and Rotherham Independents has featured many of the questionable purchases made on Parliamentary expenses and has openly criticised him for this. Now we feel totally vindicated and Peter Thirlwall’s attempt to raise many of these issues during the General Election campaign now fully justified.

We warned the voters of the Rotherham Constituency and Denis Himself, that MacShane would be eventually forced to answer the many justifiable questions his constituents have asked him but have gone unanswered. Now it has come to pass!  We are willing to present our evidence of MacShane’s less than honest or justifiable expenses claims to the Metropolitan Police who we feel confident will be asking Denis many questions and they will. no doubt, get the answers we were denied.

This slippery, oily, arrogant and self-aggrandising politician looks set to follow ‘Honest’ Eric Illsley, Barnsley’s own disgraced MP, into Court to pay the price for his wrongdoing, along with Elliot Morley, Jim Devine and David Chaytor as well as Tories Lord Hanningfield and Lord Taylor.

Now suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party and presumably the Labour Party, it is further evidence that Labour did a very poor job at vetting it’s candidates prior to the General Election and gives the lie to Gordon Brown’s claims to have done so, yet again Labour has let us down so badly! How many more greedy MPs will will come out of the ‘woodwork’ into the light one wonders?

Denis MacShane claimed £125,000 in office costs for this! It's Rotherham! NOT Central London!

Attached to his house in Rotherham just off Moorgate Road this is his rather expensive Constituency office in Rotherham.

No services are provided to this ‘office’ so without using his house attached his staff could not possibly work there! This may be a good time for Kath Sims, his secretary who works in this ‘office’, to look for a new job, I would have thought?

His brother, Edmund Matyjaszek, is also embroiled in this expenses controversy as Denis made a number of payments to a rather shadowy organisation called the European Policy Institute for ‘research and translation’. Headmaster Edmund, may come to regret this grubby little arrangement with his brother.

Many questions are still being asked about the eight laptops he bought from his parliamentary expenses, where are they now? Where have they been? Who has been using them? All unanswered.

These issues and the many other questionable expenses arrangements he has made over the years look set to bite him on the backside, big style!

We may now have a clue as to why he is so upset with IPSA and the new arrangements, making it more difficult to conceal any ‘Spanish’ practises from the authorities, perhaps?

In some parts of the Rotherham Constituency Labour Party there are quiet celebrations at Denis’s discomfiture and the sound of knives being sharpened ready for another attempt to rid themselves of  this odious and disagreeable man, who they didn’t want in the first place. Power to their elbows I say!

There is also a small group of very embarrassed supporters who are ruing the day they signed his nomination papers only a few months ago. They should be suitably chastened, because their actions now look foolish indeed! I hope they are proud of themselves for the shame they helped to bring to our Town.

Roll Call of Dishonour, MacShane’s signatories to his nomination:

Anna Chester, Keith Brisland, Barry Kaye, Ian Barron, Julie Currie, John Foden, Ian Jones, Kath Sims, Richard Crow, Sarah Crow, Mahroof Hussain, Zlakha Ahmed, Tracey Jones, Nellie McHale, Christine Burgess, Quereshi Parveen, Diana Swanson, Roger Swanson, Dave Pickering, Subodh Kapoor, Jahangir Akhtar, James Burgess, Simon Currie, Rekha Kapoor, Stephen Parkin, John Price, Tom Henley, Craig Mitchell, Alan Buckley and Ruth Hobson.
