‘£2m pension’ for grooming scandal cop: Chief constable whose force was attacked over handling of child abuse in Rotherham to retire from the role

  • David Crompton, 52, is quitting role when his contract ends in November
  • The £195,000-a-year top cop was in charge when report slammed his force
  • Inspectorate found ‘serious concerns’ over approach to protecting children

The chief constable at the centre of the Rotherham child abuse scandal is retiring with an estimated pension pot of up to £2 million.

David Crompton, 52, whose South Yorkshire force also faced sharp criticism over its handling of an investigation into Sir Cliff Richard, is quitting his £195,000-a-year job when his contract ends in November.

Mr Crompton was in charge when a report by Professor Alexis Jay revealed that 1,400 children had been sexually abused by mainly Asian men in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

Police chief announces retirement plans

SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s chief constable announced his retirement on the day a report criticised the force’s “inadequate” handling of CSE.

David Crompton’s announcement came hours after he accepted the findings of the Drew review into child sex abuse.

In a short statement, a force spokesman said: “The Chief Constable’s contract runs until November. He will retire after 31 years in policing.”

  1. It’ll be no loss to see him go, in much the same way as the other grossly overpaid ‘responsible’ public employees have.

Problem is, he’ll be replaced by an equally overpaid career jockey.

At 52, how on earth has he secured a £2,000,000 pension pot?

‘how on earth has he secured a £2,000,000 pension pot?’

Ch.Const.David Crompton can expect £7.50 for every £1 he contributed.
Police pensions are very generous-as you will have noticed.

  2. As usual in the public service – a golden handshake for being an incompetent failure, courtesy of us fools, the British taxpayers.
Not unusual in Rotherham though – seems to be par for course.

  3. Police pensions have no provision made from the allocation from their annual funding budget .It is funded from direct taxation. These are obscene amounts of money from the public purse.

    • Remember police pensions demand a 16% contribution from the employee, £31,000 per year for CC Compton. I can’t believe you begrudge the British bobby a decent pension after 30 years service. All UK police begin their career as a constable on the beat, would you do that job?

      • @ billy.
Police officers do not contribute 16%of their earnings to their pension fund.
        Contribution rate:
For members this is currently between 12.44% and 13.78% of Pensionable Earnings.
For members ineligible for ill health retirement benefits it is between 9.94% to 11.28% of
        Pensionable Earnings.
This will depend on which Tier applies to the member.
Many members joining the 2015 Scheme on 1 April 2015 (and those joining the 2015 Scheme at the end of their Tapered Protection Period ) will also have service under the 1987 Scheme or the 2006 Scheme. The member’s accrued rights under the 1987 Scheme or the 2006 Scheme will be protected (see section 12 ‘Tapered protection and members with accrued rights under the 1987 Scheme or the 2006 Scheme.

You will be able to commute part (up to 25%) of your pension at a rate of 1:12 ; therefore for every £1 of pension given up you receive a lump sum of £12

  4. Quite agree David; It is an obscene amount of money.

    Back on topic…….
Will Alan Billings publish a report showing the nett costs to ratepayers of all the inquiries into CSE in Rotherham and what input-if any-did Ch.Const.Crompton have in these inquiries?
Did we get value for money?
What did Crompton do to improve morale in SYP?
How many internal inquiries into the actions of certain police officers did Crompton instigate?
Will Ch.Const.Crompton make a sizeable donation to any of the charities set up in the wake of the CSE exposure?

    Not. Holding. Breath.

    • Alan Billings is an academic and deals with things in an abstract manner. The chief exec’ and the chief constable will be quite chummy I suspect. In order for the commissioner to be effective there needs to be some professional distance between these people. The various reports are the time gaining, and distancing tools of the procrastinating mindset of the establishment when their ideologies are threatened. The police are incapable of policing themselves and the social liberals are incapable of policing the socially liberal police. Decent sort though he is Dr Billings has been happy to accept a seat at the table when in fact the tale needs turning over.

  5. Very odd that the Drew report could not look at the past actions, and in the TV interviews he appeared to blame the IPCC for this. Much was said about how things have improved, but I recall only last year a report saying CSE was still on going and SYP were found wanting.
Dr Billings commissioned an “Independent” report, cannot look at past failings, and its all the fault of IPCC. This explains all that is wrong in Rotherham.
