MEP ordered to pay £162,000 over libellous child sex abuse comments

MEP Jane Collins has been ordered to pay £162,000 in damages to Rotherham’s three MPs.

Kevin Barron, John Healey and Sarah Champion are all entitled to £54,000 each from the UKIP MEP after remarks she made about Rotherham’s child abuse scandal were adjudged to be libellous.

She claimed in a 2014 conference speech that the MPs knew about child exploitation in the town but did nothing to intervene and failed in a court bid to prove she was entitled to MEPs’ immunity.

  1. I’m sure our whiter-than-white, we know nothing ‘innocent’ 3 MP’s will be only to happy to donate their damages awards to funds designed to protect vulnerable children. After all, they surely don’t want to be seen to profit from this scandal?
    Perish the thought.

Yes Linda justice is only for the ones who have the funds or get some one to fund it but I beleive what goes round comes round and the truth will come out and I will never stop fighting for the truth to come out as His honour Sir David Eady said about me in Court ( It is clear Mr Vines will fight to expose wrongdoing at any level and fight fearlessly for his constituents )

  5. Considering they wanted £150k damages each it isn’t really an unalloyed verdict of confidence from the court.

” Barry Sheerman, who chaired the Commons Children, Schools and Families Committee – now the Education Select Committee – between 2007 and 2010, said he felt “guilty” about the Rotherham abuse scandal.
The Labour MP for Huddersfield said MPs were aware vulnerable children were being sexual exploited “up and down the country”.
He said: “We knew about that, we didn’t do enough about it. Members of this house, many of us, knew what was going on.”

    Sheerman knew years ago

    As for MacShane

The Times reports him as having said: “I, like so many MPs, preferred to keep silent on some of the dirty secrets about bad practices in the Kashmiri Muslim community”, a community that supplies “vast resevoirs” of votes at election time.

Funny the Julie Bindel article and the 2010 Rotherham case and the subsequent Andrew Norfolk follow up(plus what was bubbling under with Risky Business) didn’t ring any bells – but there you go

Obviously the “many” MPs who “knew what was going on” didn’t include these 3 beneficiaries of the UK’s libel laws.

  6. Sir Kev said “The scale of this brutality and violence acted out on our young people in the Rotherham borough has shocked me.
“In the past 16 years I have only been approached by one family and their daughter who was an abused victim and asked for help.

“I acted promptly and had meetings with the Rotherham police about the family’s concerns in relation to the apparent lack of investigation and conviction”.

See the difference? Only one case reported to him which is very different to how many cases was he aware of?

  7. The MPs skewered Collins on a technicality. Had she said: I am told that or it is said… there would be no case to answer. As I have said before here having your ignorance of these events proved in court is no badge of honour. A sympathetic BBC will not point these trifles out one suspects.

  8. “Only one case reported to him which is very different to how many cases was he aware of?”

    Relatively rare apparently

“Sir Kevin added: “It now appears that this case was not a relatively rare one as I had thought and that the abuse by her attackers and subsequent failure of response by the very agencies whose role it was to protect her was a widespread situation and just the tip of the iceberg in terms of child sexual exploitation.”

See no evil, hear no evil(or only a little bit) and speak no evil – the tip of the Labour iceberg of incuriosity

“The issue of child sex abuse in Rotherham first came to light in November 2010 when five men from the town’s Asian community were jailed for sexual offences against underage girls.
But suspicions were already growing that the scale of the town’s problem was far more widespread”

At least Sheerman had the decency to admit he felt guilty

  9. How can you stand in court and say you did not know about child sexual abuse, then say, afterwards, in a TV interview, that you had a case reported to you ?.
    Sounds very odd to me.

What else are they allegedly not informing their MP and party member?

  10. Copy of email sent to Sir Kev at 11:30am today:

    Dear Mr. Barron

Will you confirm that you, Sarah Champion MP and John Healey MP will donate your damages awards from Jane Collins MEP to charities for the protection of vulnerable people or similar charities?
It could be viewed as unethical and unprofessional if the monies were not donated.

    Yours faithfully.

Should I order a large bag of popcorn while I wait for the reply?
