‘Enough is enough:’ Theresa May’s speech in full

Theresa May went significantly beyond a casualty update in her speech outside 10 Downing Street on Sunday morning.

Alongside as her briefing on the aftermath of Saturday night’s attack on civilians in the London Bridge and Borough Market areas, May took the opportunity to call for a change in the culture of tackling extremism in the UK.

“Last night, our country fell victim to a brutal terrorist attack once again.

As a result I have just chaired a meeting of the Government’s emergency committee, and I want to update you with the latest information about the attack.

London Bridge terror attack editorial: democracy will prevail

Terror came appallingly close to The Sunday Times last night. We watched in horror as emergency vehicles swarmed over London Bridge and the first reports of injuries and possible fatalities reached us on our doorstep. Members of our own staff were witnesses to the attack and our chief sub-editor had to leap out of harm’s way. Mercifully he was not hurt.

It is possible the timing was no coincidence, coming on the eve of the concert mourning the victims of the Manchester bombing and only five days before the general election.

Our message to the merchants of death is that Britain will not be cowed and democracy will prevail. You will not have our hate, as the brave widower of the Bataclan attacks in Paris said, but there will be justice. We are stronger and better than those who seek to divide and destroy us.

Patrick Mercer: Terrorists must not be allowed to derail our democracy

There’s a horrid, icy predictability about last night’s attacks in London.

First comes the fact that the Government lowered the alert level from ‘critical’ – just like the Labour government did in 2005 after the July Tube attacks and just before another wave of bombers tried to strike two weeks later.

Now, I’m not suggesting that a high alert level would have stopped Saturday night’s ghastliness, but there was a sigh of relief when the alert level was reduced, a feeling that we’d had our attack and now it was back to ‘business as usual’. And that’s what the terrorists wanted, of course.

  1. Enough is enough! Will she even do as other countries have done and ban the burka, which is surely a security risk. UKIP the only party to advocate this, have been derided because they also made the valid point that it also prevents vitamin D absorption from sunlight and rickets is on the increase in the Muslim community as are birth defects from the fact that their mothers are often their cousins.

    • 1. I don’t think that any of the assailants either last night or in Manchester, were wearing burkas, were they?
      2. We humans do not absorb Vitamin D from sunlight – check the science, or just read this article: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/25/ban-burqas-promote-vitamin-d-odd-ideas-ukip-manifesto
      3. Yes, cousin-marriage is a real problem, but not confined to any Muslim community as I understand – and my personal knowledge of it. It occurs in all Indian sub-continent communities, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh etc.
My understanding is that it does not occur in Muslim communities in the Middle East or the Maghreb.

Correct me if I am wrong.

      • Reg, Marrying of cousins is not only practiced but recommended in Lebanon at least. My Lebanese friend confirms it.
It’s news to me that we don’t absorb vitamin D from the sunlight. But then scientific information changes so often I can’t keep up with it……

      • RR: You are correct in saying we do not, as I erroneously stated, absorb vitamin D directly from sunlight, it’s rather that the body uses the sunlight to produce vitamin D. The point being the burka prevents this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1154211.stm
The Guardian article is puerile in trying to equate the wearing of a burka with a beekeeper wearing protective clothing in which his face can clearly be seen. As for Sikhs marrying their cousins by equating them as well as Hindus engaging in this unhealthy practice you are saying two wrongs make a right.http://sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/43068-sikhs-marrying-their-own-cousins/
        As for Hindus: https://www.quora.com/Is-cousin-marriage-legal-in-India

        • Mal,
Along with many other commentators, the Guardian was simply mocking Nuttall.
… and let’s not forget that over-exposure to sunlight leads to skin cancer.
(A close friend of mine was recently in hospital with a serious infection. It was found that she had very very low Vitamin D levels. She was given 1 injection – and told to have the levels measured again in 3 month’s time).

Two wrongs never make a right.

My comment on Sikh Punjabis was based on personal experience.

I made a major mistake regarding the peoples of the MIddle-East and the Maghreb and have corrected it in a response to Linda above; and also included a link to a comprehensive research article on the subject where you will find this click-able map to its prevalence by country. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3419292/figure/Fig1/

      • The most natural way to get vitamin D is by exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B rays). This can happen very quickly, particularly in the summer. You don’t need to tan or burn your skin to get vitamin D. You only need to expose your skin for around half the time it takes for your skin to begin to burn. How much vitamin D is produced from sunlight depends on the time of day, where you live in the world and the color of your skin. The more skin you expose the more vitamin D is produced. Source….https://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/how-do-i-get-the-vitamin-d-my-body-needs/ so although we do not absorb vitamin D from sunlight it appears we do indeed need the sun to produce it . So the fact that some one is covered up suggests that not as much vitamin D will be produced.

      Typically emotive language.
If you want to engage in intelligent debate you can start by saying-correctly IMV-the number of police officers and police budgets has been cut, however you would be foolish to equate reduced police manpower with incidents of terrorism.
I don’t remember you mentioning Blair or Brown being “Incapable of standing up to saudi arabia and middle east”. And we had still had terrorism.

Who do you trust to defend the country
Some one who simpathises with terrorists
And thinks you can have a nice little chat with them
Or some one who is not afraid to stand up to them
    And defend the country
I am neither a Labour or Conservative supporter

To broker peace you have to be brave and grasp the nettle by being willing to talk hence irish talks by major then late mo mowlem with paisley and gerry adams.

Jaw jaw is always better than war war.
hence the illegal wars and occupation by uk and yanks in iraq.
that has lead to a more unsafer world for both them and terror to the wider world. Politicians and media were wisely warned and ignored and saw record rallies accross the uk by people against bloodshed and bombing..
