A religious hate crime?

Does anyone else find this sign offensive?

As a Catholic I do, the words ” there is no god besides Allah ” question is as a converted building to mosque the sign would be in the planning permission, so who allowed it in the council, plus which building inspector sign off on it knowing Eastwood is a volatile area, the police seem to think its a religious hatred crime.

.

South Yorkshire Police’s crime reference no 0/138510/2017, logging this as a hate crime!

  1. Don’t be absurd.
It’s the Shahada – the proclamation of faith by muslims.
You might not like it, but it isn’t a hate crime.

    • Would it?
      I will happily state that:
“I don’t believe in any of that God/Sky fairy nonsense”.
      – and surely that is the opposite to “مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱلله” which when properly translated into EN says “There is no god but God.”

  2. Glastonbury pagan shops have in the past been attacked by born again Christian zealots. That wasa hate crime.
Christians ought to know the Jesus is identified as a great prophet of Islam along with Abraham and Moses.
When they say Jesus is God that is not the way Muslims see it.
I don’t mind signs like this as I would not want to enter any building by mistake!
I hate religious zealots wanting to stuff their religion in my face. Is that a hate crime?

      …or the Jewish!
Don’t the Christians have another god called “The Holy Ghost” or, well something like that?

      • Ask a Christian.
The only thing I have in common with Alastair Campbell is I don’t do religion (except may be pagan pantheism).
I believe Christians have a daddy, a kiddo and a spooky who are three but one and the same but I could be confused about that.
However I appreciate some Christian writers like: Gilda’s, Boethius, Aethelwulf of York, Cowper, Coleridge, Milton, Winstanley, Betjeman, etc..

        • Hi PoetM… I find your comment above something of a paradox…The condescending comment that Christians have a daddy a kid and spooky and then go on to say you appreciate the writings of men like Cowper, Coleridge, Milton and others makes no sense at all….Wish Christian antagonists would do some decent research to bring to the discussion. I would like to add C S Lewis’s ‘Mere Christianity’ to the mix of compelling Christian writers. Be careful though because true Christianity is not for the faint hearted…

        • I was quoting Dave Allen, critic of some things Christian. As for paradox, we are all full of them. Christianity, for example preaches love and forgiveness but has a track record of violence. Religious wars and witch burning are indicative of this.
The above objected to a sign over a Mosque. This I an ambivalent about. I was brought up in a country that had churches but no mosques. At core I do not have a high opinion of some followers of Islam. At the same time not all Christians are loving and forgiving so fail in their calling also. However Christians do not seem to burn books whilst Muslims wanted to ban Salman Rushdie’s book and issued death threat fatwahs against him.
My reply was intended to be light hearted to an atheist. If I offended you , I apologise.

        • Hi, PoetM…. Did you read in the news the other day that science has now been able to find proof that consciousness is in tact after we flat line. Try to imagine Dave Allan taking his last gasp and finding his 3 million reward for blasphemy is no help at all now…..My perverse sense of humour is tickled at the thought. I am then acutely aware that my last gasp may be in the very near future. A sobering thought indeed.

      • Reg…I quote… “Don’t Chistians have another god called The Holy Ghost” ?… Only one way to find out is go to the source (The Bible)…You are good at research Reg so I don’t understand why you expect to find answers to this question from Rothpol commentors.. Go to the source Reg….. Or are you afraid what you might find….I say this respectfully.
I once said stupid things and what I knew not…..

  3. I am a follower of Jesus and I don’t feel offended by this sign. I just think they are mistaken and will happily debate with them the pros and cons on the basis of evidence and reasoned discussion. If they don’t want to (if anyone is unwilling to enter into such a discussion) it is a sure fire sign of the intellectual weakness of their position. It’s also a simple question of “do unto others as you woud have them do unto you” Would I want someone to stop me sharing the good news of God’s love in Christ and the fact that he shared our life and died on the cross to bring us back to the Father (see what I did there?!), because it was a hate crime? No. Neither should I, then, stop others stating their beliefs, with respect for the freedom of others to reject it, refute it or ignore it. The teaching of Jesus actually discourages the forcing of religious belief on people. We are told to move on if we get rejected. But this whole application of “hate crime” to sharing or stating religious beliefs (or any beliefs) is a step on the road to shutting down reasoned discussion and dialogue. It’s part of a secularist dictatorship imho, another brick in the wall of pathetic, individualistic, fingers-in-my-ears, don’t tell me what to think or I will play the “offense” card culture. And surely the police have got better things to do? Herendethelesson!

  4. To respond to the original question – Yes I find this sign “offensive” – but then again I find most things connected to this ,so called faith, to be offensive especially in a democratic society such as the UK ! Before the “Thought Police” come knocking on my door may I say that “being “offended” by anything is simply a state of mind, not a fatal disease ! I am unaware of anyone actually having died of “offendedness” (assuming there is such a word)..
