Seismic Shift in Central Rotherham politics: 2016, a Momentous Year?

In June the Labour Party received 92 new membership applications from Rotherham East Ward, all were Muslims.

What is going on? What does it mean, as statistically it cannot be an accident or a coincidence when typical membership application numbers run at 2 or 3 per month?

It’s sufficiently suspicious for local officials to inform the Party’s Regional Office. Not as a  reaction to race or religion, as some will remember UNITE being accused of similar in Falkirk in order to rig a selection process. Then an inquiry was held.

The one thing we can be certain of is that the 92 have not suddenly become converts to Kier Hardy’s principles, nor even those of Tony Blair for that matter. Let’s face it, we’ll be surprised if most even know they’ve joined the Party.

One explanation for the 92 is that it reflects the battle going on between different groups within the Mirpuri community. A struggle for power.

Someone or some group are working on the principle that controlling the Ward means controlling the candidate choice for 2016. Again, knowing the uselessness of Labours central management they may well be right, as the promised selection process clean-up was running out of puff last year, never mind next.

In a previous article I referred to the old guard of Jahangir Akhtar & Shaukat Ali seeking to re-establish their power within the community and the Party. That they form one side that is seeking to re take power from the likes of Sagir Alam and other factions.

Readers will have noticed that the first respondent to that piece, Anonymous, confirmed its content by throwing a political threat in the face of Sagar Alam, simply for placing the wishes of the people before those of the taxi drivers.

Meaning that the purchasing of 92 memberships is like the opening bid in a forthcoming political game, where different biraderi use ward votes like poker chips to win control.

The build-up of such a block may well be a “two fingers up to you” response from those using the taxi drivers as their support. Remember Jahangir Akhtar’s tweeted threat to Councillors who didn’t support the taxi drivers? This may be the opening low.

It will be interesting to see if something similar happens in Boston Castle. If so war will definitely have been declared between biraderi…who knows, maybe now Akhtar and Mahroof are out of the Council they can openly declare the mutual contempt they once held quietly?

Another opinion, not necessarily contradictory is that Shaukat is concerned about being de selected as labour candidate for 2016. By taking such a big stake in Rotherham East Ward he is ensuring that whoever does get nominated has his approval. Or maybe building a legal challenge to de selection on the basis of his popularity

It is beginning to look like the 2016 elections for Rotherham Council will be the most significant since it was formed 40 years ago. And maybe momentous in terms of race relations.

All insights appreciated.

  1. Your penultimate paragraph seems very likely to be correct. Oh,
just a thought, were the 92 application forms filled in with the same handwriting?

  2. How do you know they were all Muslims? I’m not aware that the Labour Party asks for religious preference when people apply to join.

    • To Anon…..They read all the names out at CLP and give members a chance to object if they have reason….they were all Muslim names…could be Muslim born, and all turned atheist,,,but seems unlikely:)

When the numbers and names were read out several of the white members couldn’t refrain from laughing at the lack of subtlety. Only, somewhat dour white member commented that it is a great recruitment job undertaken by the fantastic members in Roth East, can’t decide if he’s ultimately naive, ultimately thick or knows more than we do.

Certainly I know some long standing members in East who didn’t know what a fantastic recruitment job they were doing. In fact when told by me they were quietly wetting themselves, but not with laughter.

A funny bit was that five came from the same household address, meaning I’m impressed. We can’t get out family foursome to agree what to have for tea, never mind to all join the same political party at the same time

The only people not smiling at CLP were the Mirpuri,,,like they know it isn’t a good thing.

  3. Although this group of Pakistani’s is an manipulative and disingenuous segment of the community , they are only 3% of the population of Rotherham. Maybe in the past they were able to pull the wool over people eyes, but haven’t we learn anything about how they operate and how to beat them. They only succeed if people look the other way and we all know the cost of ignorance to our children, families and town.

  5. The Labour party is advertising for an ‘Organiser’ to help with next year’s elections.

It seems to me Labour party members could make a good impression and organise themselves for a start.
So the Regional Office of the Labour party held an inquiry?
Then what happened……………………………?? Has a report been forwarded to Labour’s HQ?
Do Champion, Healey and Barron-by remaining silent-give their tacit approval to vote rigging and possible electoral fraud?
You have seen the future for Labour in Rotherham.

    • Two people came forward for the East ward selection meeting in April 2015.
      The result was
      Tajamal Khan 12
      Shakoor Adalat 9
It was alleged that some of the members did not live in the ward still voted.
Shakoor Adalat threw his dummy out and walked in a temper not even acknowledging the result.
This time it’s family feud of land in Pakistan

Zahir is best friend of Sajid Buggary Bostan and his also related Taiba Yaseen and Sagir Alam.

    • No matter how they rig the selection it’s the votes at the actual election that counts.

But with the apathy of the indigenous population and tribal Labour voting these corrupt people know they have a very good chance of getting a gravy train ticket. Once more I call for compulsory voting.

      • on this side of the M1, labour, especially recently, have demonstrated that they never allowed internal democracy to influence the outcome of pre-selected fodder for parliament, raising serious issues and concerns about the legitimacy and probity of the individuals concerned and therefore of the labour party itself, which is absolutely impotent at lawful self-regulation

  6. The few power hungry individuals are yet again using the Pakistani community of Rotherham for their own personal benefit.

As for the 92 new members, I don’t think any of them really care about who is elected as the next candidate, just like the rest of us, they’re more concerned about paying the bills, raising their children and where to go on their next holiday.
