It seems like every week a politician or preacher disgraced for money/sex/bullying or other reasons, ends up rediscovering God, denounces his previous self as possesed by the devil and re-dedicates  himself to a pure and simple life in the future. … Continue reading

Fireman Sam’s New Car

A simple question, in times of severe  pressure on Fire Service budgets do you try to maintain the number of operational fire appliances or do you buy £36,000 Audi A6 executive cars for the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue senior command team?

A no brainer you would think, not if you are Cllr Alan Atkin and Cllr Alan Buckley both members of the SYFRS Authority.

Both of our RMBC Councillors will give the go ahead to purchase the executive cars ensuring the egos of the Chief Fire Officer, his Deputy and other senior officers are maintained while at the same time approving the closure of fire stations and making front line fire fighters redundant.

Let’s hope the cars come with a full BA team and fitted with a Simon Snorkel!

Another ‘Pilgrim’ Progresses?

Rotherham Politics brings you news of a second Trades Union ‘Pilgrim’, serving as a Councillor on Rotherham MBC.

This time it involves Barnsley MBC Unison Convener, Brian Steele. Who famously replaced Richard Russell as Labour Councillor representing Hoober Ward.

A typical silly season story, might be the usual groaning response from readers, but you would be wrong.

The issue of ratepayer funded Trades Union lay officials ‘tossing it off on the rates’ is important enough to merit attention, but when coupled with service as a Councillor on an adjacent Authority, it starts to raise the most fundamental of questions, involving the potential for conflicts of interests of a variety of kinds? Some are especially acute when neighbouring Authorities are involved.

Pilgrim’s Progress?

Emma Hoddinott, the Wickersley Borough Councillor, Labour Group Press Officer and Unison North Yorkshire County Council ‘Pilgrim’, lately at the Olympics, knows a thing or two about upsetting people does Emma!

Emma Hoddinott was elected to RMBC this May and was therefore the surprise choice as Labour Group Press Officer, a position normally reserved for someone more experienced.

Masterful inactivity usually characterises the role of this post holder and the twin mantras of Labour Group are there to guide them, they are of course “stay out of the Advertiser!” and “say nowt!”

Would she be an improvement, more open and transparent, maybe? There were some early encouraging signs that she would be a refreshing change and indeed an improvement on the past.

Our hopes were dashed when it transpired Emma Hoddinott was emailing the entire Labour Group membership, instructing them to seek prior approval from herself, before making any public utterances!

This did not go down well with certain members, not at all well! In fact she has single handedly ensured that Labour Group is so leaky right now, it resembles a colander! Thanks for that Emma.
